We are starting my dog in protection. After having a bad bad experience with the first trainer, we found a new trainer and he evaluated him, he did a method called fight or flight. He said the dog is very stable and is a good candidate for the training. My question is, once he has gone through the training will he be able to be around strangers and be social in public without feeling a threat? I want a civil dog, but a protection dog if a threat is made. The trainer seems promising and seems to know what he is doing. I have done a lot of research, I just hope he can be civil once the training is finished. Im open for anyones input and advice. Thanks.
I'm not getting into any PPD training discussion because I have no business doing so.
I thought it might help to point out that social and civil are 2 very different things when talking about a PPD, though.
Civil is going to mean something along the lines of a dog not being focused on the equipment used in bitework. A civil dog will bite flesh. The abscence of sleeves or bite suits will not keep the dog from biting.
Oh, Mylanta. Please tell me that the TRAINER did not say "civil unless threatened."
Civil means something entirely different in dog talk than it means in common, every day language. Like when my ex asks me why I can't be civil. I tell him I *am* being civil- stand back.

I hope my post did not give the impression I was trying to give "advice" on PPDs - nothing could be further from my intention! Just pointing Mylanta to some information on the topic. Really. Honestly. (I'm trying really hard to be civil... and social.)
Right! I May need to rephrase... He did say he will train him to be civil. However I made it clear I do not want a aggressive dog. Like a dog who will bite someone when there is not a threat.
Iam familiar with PPDs but when it comes to my own dog in training I'm nervous! I guess because as of now he is pretty stable and social, but our town and neighborhood is a very bad place. We have had a lot of problems with crime and robbery. In the end I just want him to be friendly in public and to people who are not s threat, but protect us and our property if needed. I have a 8 year old shepherd, he is PP trained but he recently hurt his back and he dosent get around to well anymore. So we want our young dog to be trained.
A dog is civil or it isn't. That has more to do w/genetic temperament, IMO, than any trained behavior. Can he train him to bite sans equipment? Sure...but it gets interesting for the decoy;-)
All I was trying to say was that I hope YOU, Alyssa, are the one who misspoke and the TRAINER fully understands the term "civil."
