Having trouble getting the e-book to launch soooo, i was walking today with my 12 week old and had two dogs off-leash approach, i picked up the one and submitted him (alpha roll) after verbal command was ineffective, the other dog listened and its owner went the other way.We also walked past a fairly large rottie that was in the yard with his owner who luckily had a garden hose and sprayed his dog, im pretty sure he was coming for us if not, i guess the bear spray is the best?? what if i have to protect my pup w/o spray, what does the article say about breaking up a fight?? carry a baton or stick???? THANKS for any and all opinions, its just that some ppl (vet included) dont agree with my "aloof" puppy socialization belief, not like i really care but.......

If you had time to alpha roll a dog without getting your ass bit, it wasn't a threat. Relax.
I don't have to be there to know that you were nowhere near an "attack" today.

Matt, do you meet a lot of uncontrolled dogs? Can you avoid the areas where off-leash dogs are?
Also, welcome to the board.

Yes. One time, shame on them. Two times, shame on you.
Maybe not fair, but what are you gonna do? Dog fu on every dog that you see?

Matt, you are doing a good job researching, and it's great that you're here, asking and reading. Good for you. And protecting your puppy is exactly what you should be doing.
Avoiding any area with known uncontrolled dogs would be your first step, IMO.
You might want to post in the Member Intro section, too .... perhaps include a picture of your puppy.

Any off leash dog is a threat to my new puppy, if i dont know the dog then it is a threat, PERIOD it may not have been an "alpha roll" but i took the dog by its collar and put him down, it is the owners job to have their dog on leash and under control , if not i will do that for them , i have a 12 week old puppy that i refuse to let have a bad experience, so u relax

Matt--there are no threats here. Just put the knife down, please.
We're all more than capable of putting on impressive threat/deterrence displays, I'm sure, but there's no reason to be adversarial with people who, compared to the general public, see the issue the exact same way as you do.
Now, having said that...I was in a similar situation the other day. I did genuinely feel threatened (Roger and I were charged by a 150-lb American Bulldog). So I yelled and screamed and looked the MF'er right in the eye, but "alpha rolling" or even touching him would have been absolutely out of the question. I can't even conceive of doing it. So if that actually worked on the dog without you sustaining any injuries, I think it's worth considering that he/she might not have been intent on causing harm.

Matt,
I don't think anyone was intimating that you should let a strange dog approach your puppy. What they were saying is that laying hands on a strange dog (especially one with aggression on its mind) and putting it in a compromising situation is an awesome way to get yourself bitten badly. Trust me on this; I have scars to prove it and I'm not proud of them. The fact that you weren't bitten is actually a very good indication that the dog had no bad intentions.
It's much better to run stray dogs off without touching them, unless necessary. And if it becomes necessary I would never force the other dog into a down. It's only going to either tick the dog off more, or make it feel like it has to fight for its life.
Most people here wouldn't advocate alpha rolling their own dogs, let alone a strange one.
