Why do dogs burry bones? Apple Lou doesn't burry kibble treats, but when we were out yesterday, I have her two biscuits. She carefully placed each one on the ground and attempted to cover it with the grass around it. Then when we went out again last night she sniffed her treasures and found one (I know where they both were, but she only rediscovered one). She looked almost more shocked than me that she had found it, and went on to eat her treasure.
Is there a reason why dogs burry bones? My past dogs didn't burry them...so it was a delight to watch and a quiz as to why she decided to burry them.

It's an atavistic action to keep their leftovers from other predators for later return to the goody in times of scarcity, and the opposite, too: it would also help them to stock up against later less abundant times when they have a time of plenty.

The burying as opposed to just hiding in some bushes -- I believe that would be to lessen the scent and make it harder for their competitors to come along behind and scavenge from their pantry.

I read somewhere, I believe it was in regards to raw diets, something about dogs burying bones so they 'ripen'. Anyone know about this? I will try and look back to find it somewhere...
Laya loves to bury her bones. She always knows right where they are. She will even gaurd the 'spot' from other dogs (given the chance). We always say she's 'marinating' them. I like to watch her do it - she picks the spot carefully, looks around to see if anybody's watching, carefully and quietly digs her hole, looks around again, and then carefully burries it often leaving little evidence of ground disturbance. It's cool.
