One of my males is having some vomiting issues. I've had him around 3 months now and cannot figure out any association. Initially I thought it to be related to the change of homes. I've kept him on the same diet (Evo) initially to transition him but haven't done so because of this vomiting. He isn't a water gulper. He'll go 3-5 days without and then 1-3 times a day for a few days, then stop, on and on. Just when I think its over, he starts up again. The time of day is never the same. It happens hours (2+) after meals.
I've broken his meals into 5 small feedings per day. Gradually added in kefir.
Vet checks, blood/stool studies and abdominal xrays normal. Stool output normal. Eager appetite. He is a very fast eater, so I've tried spreading it out across the floor, muffin tins, etc to slow down the intake. His weight is flutuating losses and gains of 7 pounds.
I just hate to see him having to deal with this and am concerned that he isn't maintaining weight. He really is quite thin now @ 89#.
Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts. I am hesitant to switch to raw or any other diet with this going on or to make it worse? Since he's not on raw could try the pepcid (per vet direction)? Give him more adjustment time? Anything..... thx

He's had this the whole three months? Is it actual food vomitus (not bile-type liquid)?
No diarrhea, right?
What is the vet thinking? Stomach irritation?
Did the vet suggest using Pepcid just when an episode starts, or daily?
Is he your only dog on this food?
Have you been using all one big bag or has this gone on from one package to another?

Thx Connie!
Yes, he has been an on/off puker since I acquired him, 3 months. It is always a large amount mushy broken down food like you would see if you soaked kibble in water and let it sit there with very small amount of bile. No blood, no odd objects, no grass (doesn't eat grass outside). He doesn't get to wrenchy when vomits.
No diarrhea, brown/firm.
The vet is thinking stomach irritation possibly stress induced and Pepcid daily. Really she's leaning toward me taking off kibble and more toward home cooked meals. Which I'm fine with, I'm just nervous to make it worse for him. I'm not really fond of pepcid, sounds more like a band-aide type fix- maybe. It just feels like I'm missing something and I can't put my finger on it. I'm being very wishy=washy with this whole thing...sorry
He is the only dog on the Evo/kibble and have gone through multiple bags as I keep buying small bags not knowing what to do.

I don't think that Pepsid is harmful. It would be interesting to see if the Pepsid helped.
Some dogs would present again and again at the clinic with this complaint. I know it's not helpful to say this, but I think that this is a common problem.
One dog with this complaint I recall had a gastric foreign body (small rubber ball, like a handball-ball). He was better after it was removed.

Thank you Dr Betty and Connie, thx for helping me come to some decisions. We'll start the pepcid tomorrow and a different food over the weekend and see how things go.
Geez I hope there isn't a ball or other FB in there -- will keep an eye on things just in case.

So I started the pepcid about 10 days ago and all was going well. One vomit around 6 days and nothing for 4 days and now today....vomit x2, acting very lethargic, keeping a curled body posture, hackles up, temp 100.3, cool to touch, head hung low. I don't know what to think, related or something different? Previously he would vomit but yet act like nothing was wrong. Absolutely zero notable changes. We have vet appt at 3:30, so I have to worry until then.
Plus I work with a bunch of non-dog people and really had no excuse to offer except the truth that I can't come today because dog is sick. So they're a little ticked, which I guess I don't blame them as I didn't act on this until 11a. I'm bummed....

I don't know how helpful this is, but my dog was a chronic 'vomiter' too. Sometimes it was accompanied by diarrhea, but most often just the vomiting.
He would not vomit for a few days, then vomit a couple of times a day for a couple of days, then a stretch of no vomit, etc. with seemingly no rhyme or reason to the timing. A couple of times a year he would vomit with diarrhea until it was a vet visit for sub-q fluids. All tests said nothing was wrong, everything normal.
I very carefully switched him to raw (with Connie's help) and all of it stopped. I mean, just stopped cold. I think it's been almost two years and there has been no recurrence.
Is there a reason that it may not be a good idea to go raw with this fellow? Depending on what the vet says, of course.

A dog of mine had pyloric stenosis surgery. He would regurgitate his food vs vomitting on a daily basis. He still yaks from time to time but not nearly as often.
