We have two terriers, 6yo male Chili and 1.5 yo female Saana. Before we found Leerburg they were loose in the house and the female, Saana was always harassing the older one. She would also climb in his crate and make herself at home. At times she would kick him out of his crate. I did not like it but was not sure what to do with it.
We started groundwork July 5th and now we are at a point that we have one of them out at a time on a leash or tethered to me depending on what we are doing.
The other day Saana was out with my husband and Chili was loose inside on a leash. He climbed in her crate, sniffed around, then got out. Also when we have company we want to put them in the bedroom and for all bunch of reasons Chili will end up in Saana's crate.
Is it OK to let them do that or should the crate be strictly his and hers and never used for the other one?
This may be a silly question but I don't want to support any inappropriate territorial issues that will come and bite us down the road.
I don't know how others feel, but I have always had a strict policy around crates. Each dog had a crate that they used exclusively, and nobody else was allowed inside. When I removed a dog from a crate, I would shut the door so there was no opportunity for anyone else to climb in. I've seen too many dogs play games and get pushy about another dog's space, and I just won't allow it around crates (or anywhere, really).
I kind of feel like a dog's crate is his/her space. If it's empty, the door is closed. If it's occupied, no other dogs are allowed to approach it. I want the crate to be like a private 'sanctuary'.
Just to keep it simple Lenka, you should probably have a crate for each one. They're smaller dogs, so the crates arent too expensive. I put my dogs in whichever crate I feel like, but I don't let one bother the other when they're in them. It sounds like you have some of that going on.
Steve,
I actually have four crates, two bigger ones (kitchen) and two smaller ones (bedroom). The problem is when people come over we need one big one in the bedroom for Chili because he does not fit in the small one. I have a soft sided crate that is kind of flimsy but will do for what we need it for because the only other way to get a big crate for him is to move Saana's into the bedroom and use that. Chili's is too difficult to move. I don't know if this makes sense but the thread did answer my questions. Thank you so much!
