Falcon's appointment with the Ophthamologist was today. The diagnosis is an immune conjunctivitis with a possible allergy component as well. He is on two different eye drops (Dexamethasone/Neo adn Lacrimor) with the Neo drops being tapered off over the next two weeks and then continuing with the Lacrimor - for a few more weeks and possibly indefinatly.
The Ophthamologist would not/could not refer us to the allergist in the same building - we have to go back to our vet for the referral, then back to the specialist.
He assured me that this is not a contagious situation that Falcon and his buddy Moses have been "swapping" back and forth.

Poor little (purty) Falcon.
Did the opthamologist give a long term prognosis? Will this affect his eyesight at all?
I am glad Falcon has you taking care of him. We know he will get his meds like he's supposed to.
(Can you tell I'm getting frustrated by all our non-compliant with meds patients?) lol
Best wishes!

Lisa, I hate to admit, I couldn't ask about his long-term sight prognosis... I've been searching on the net tonight and of course, am not getting any definitive answers, so by my next visit with the doc I'll have my composure and will ask the tough questions.
Thank God for marker training...Although the ointment experience was horrid, the eye drops are going so much better. Within the last few days he sits there so calmly and patiently for his drops.
I know you all feel like this about your dogs, but I simply love my big lug. He makes me smile. I'm learning so much from him.
I hope his eyesight is the last thing to go... Well, actually I hope his bladder and bowels are the LAST things to go, but eyesight is right there in that mix.

I'm sorry to hear this for Falcon. Did the ophthal say what he/she was hoping an allergist could do in addition to the drops already prescribed for any poss allergy component?

Barbara, how did the opthamologist make the determination that it was immune-related, as opposed to 'regular' conjunctivitis? Or is that where the allergy component comes in?
If it's allergy-related, that might mean that the symptoms are alleviated in the winter? (less pollen, etc in the air?)
Keep us posted...

Ditto for me too. Very interested in hearing what this means.
It is good that you now have somewhere to go with it and treatment too.
As for allergies they are no fun at all, and really a PITA!
Right now our pollen counts are sky high here and so Kaia is back on prescription antihistamines. But in conjunction with the therapeutic doses of salmon oil, it helps tremendously.
There are things you can do if it is allergies, so it doesn't have to be the worst thing to deal with.

Conjunctivitis seems like a frustrating diagnosis. In fact ANY of the "itis" problems are frustrating. I'd want a more detailed diagnosis than that. With illusrations, graphs, and pie charts
Keep up the detective work Barbara! Don't get down yet. The diagnosis ain't over till the fat lady sings. And its not always as bad as it seems. Falcon will get through it. And even worst case scenario and there's vision loss down the road, I know a good many HAPPY visually impaired dogs. But don't think that way- its a far way off.

Ditto on the above!
Until Falcon's eye condition becomes chronic, my time line still only suggest acute, so I am banking on him making a full recovery!
