Hi
Short history, 7 year old male Boerboel, intact, sired two healthy litters, he is otherwise healthy except for sporadic bleeding from his penis, at times heavy and constant dripping and other times slight.
Initial tests, i.e bloods and urine showed no sign of infection, subsequent 'new' test for cancer of the prostate was inconclusive and so a biopsy was performed and the prostate came back clear, they are waiting on the bladder biopsy results, he was put on strong antibiotics which SEEM to have helped stop the bleeding, there was a shadow on the bladder, hence the biopsy, he has no other symptons, though the antibiotics have knocked him about a bit.
It is a waiting game now, and I would love to be able to tell my friend that it could be something less sinister than cancer, has anyone any ideas?
Thanks
Tracey

And when you say blood do you mean pure blood or blood and urine mixed? And where is the blood coming from? Urinary tract? Bladder? Penis? Is there blood present inside the bladder too?

I don't have any experience, just throwing some things out there...stones, trauma, (poss unintentional self inflicted), bleeding disorder? Maybe talk with vet about an ultrasound on the prostate? I'm just not sure if an ultrasound will tell you more than yes or no it is enlarged, but may provide answers to the 'shadow' near the bladder. An infected prostate can take 6-8 wks of antibiotics and there can also be hypertropy of the ogran that can be something (infection, cancer, etc) or benign.
Is he painful?

Hi
This started about 3 weeks ago, no blood in bladder, battery of tests done in a very short time and now waiting for bladder biopsy, no other symptons, possible bladder stone but not exhibiting classic signs, no pain, no wincing, no loss of appetite, just fed up with antibiotics and the inevitable knock on effect, the vet has been scratching his head, bit of a mystery at the mo.

Did they say anything about an enlarged prostate....cancer or not? First thought for me with a male intact at that age would be enlarged prostate.

Hi
The vet suspected cancer at the start of this, but all bloods came back clear of infection, and the latest cancer specific test he uses came back inconclusive, hence the prostate and bladder biopsys, prostate is clear, and I think the bladder biopsy results come back today.
I was thinking bladder or kidney stones, so far that isn't showing likely either, the bleeding isn't watery, and as someone here has suggested, I also wondered if he had either injured himself or had been over zelously cleaning or nibbling, but there is no sign of irritation or inflammation to that area, the bleeding can be constant, like a dripping nose bleed day and night, or just occasional spotting with hours inbetween, as I said earlier, the antibiotics do seem to ease it temporarily, which of course might suggest infection, but none of the bloods or urine samples suggested that, I think the vet put him on them as a precaution, it is all very odd and Jan, his owner is beside herself.

Bladder biopsy came back clear, he has been put on Tardak, which is a chemical castration I think??? Going back for further consult next week to see how he is after the 1st injection, bleeding has stopped completely.
If he has responded to the Tardak in as much the bleeding has stopped, surely that suggests hormone abnormalities?

Tardak is a temporary "chemical castration," right?
Is the idea to see what it does before deciding on actual surgical (permanent) neutering?
eta:
http://www.vet2pet.co.uk/pethealth/doghealth/showdiseasedetails.asp?ID=34&Animal=1
says
There is also an injection, called Tardak, that can stop testosterone production for 4-6 weeks, so this is sometimes used to check that castration will help, or can be used instead if a dog is too old/ill for surgery (although the cost actually ends up higher than surgery with repeated injections).
