Richmond b.c is the 1st city in Canada to ban the sale of puppies in pet stores. I was at the meeting and all the speakers were amazing and all brought something different to the table. The pet store owners also spoke. When a lady who rescues puppymill dogs was speaking she had many in tears including one of the councillors. It wasnt expected to happen so quickly, as the ban on the sale of rabbits took a year. All except one member was in favour of the ban! They could have chose to regulate it(which means nothing) and I thought they would go that way,or ban it and ban it they did!!
There are 3 pet stores that sell dogs in Richmond, pet wonder Land, which is a small family run store(my cat came from there originally, he has f.i.p) Pet Habitat, which is in a busy mall and pj's pet which is a huge chain store. They will have til April to get rid of their "stock".
I actually was formally employed at both pet Habitat and pj's and can attest to the deplorable condition of the animals.
Hopefully other cities will follow suit. It wont solve the problem of course but is a big step and I am very happy !!!!

I have never been to the pj's in Richmond, but the one in Toronto made me sick to my stomach. The fact that they sell parvo+ puppies* for thousands of dollars on monthly payment plans is despicable.
*speaking from multiple first hand experiences treating these animals.
That is a huge step, I'm sure many other cities in BC will follow. There is a shop in a neighbouring town to where I live, that actually has had 2 lemurs for sale, for quite some time. I know there have been numerous complaints, but nothing done.

On this morning's news show, they said that San Francisco is about to do this same thing as well. It would be the first step in the U.S. to make headway towards shutting down the selling of pups in stores because they come from puppy mills.
It is a start and I for one will be hoping that other states will start to follow suit here as well.

a lemur? Has the spca bin notified?
I hope this ban will eventually be an end to all animals being sold in pet stores! I know this is a dog forum but just briefly i will say that i work in an animal shelter and know that we get hundreds of birds, chinchillas, rabbits, degus, turtles, mice, hamsters, rats, gerbils, reptiles etc. I would say a very large if not all have been bought originally from a pet store where they arent educated that these are actually delicate, intricate, and hard/expensive creatures to maintain.
Without saying this applies to dogs as well(and even cats) A lack of education! We have had people dump purebred(and i use that term loosely) 8wk(and i say 8weeks loosely) at our shelter b/c they pee and bark. They just spent sometimes upwards of $2000 and give it up the next day......sad

Ties in with this topic nicely, doesn't it? It almost seems that the simplest solution would be to change the animals' status from being property to something else and then deal with the fine points of how we are going to have our meat/fur/leather.

While I am completely in support of not selling puppies, kittens, etc... in pet stores, in light of the current "Regulatory Czar" Cass Sustein's beliefs and goals, I do not support changing the status of animals and THEN dealing with the finer points... Very slippery slope in my humble opinion.

Oh I like it! If puppy mills have no public outlet for their pups, it's going to take a big bite out of their business.
Also, isn't that how the Hunt Corporation contributes to the Mass Marketing of pups, they serve as brokers for pet stores and puppy mills? If pet stores didn't exist, the Hunt Corporation would have to sell the pups it acquires from mills and byobs and could be held directly responsible for the conditions in which they are raised.

This is great news! A step in the right direction! I hope Florida (along with whole country) start banning this as well!

This is awesome...I really hope the states will follow this example and do the same. We have several local pet stores and those poor puppies are pitiful examples of their breeds. I can't even go inside any more because it makes me so angry.
