For those who don't know, my husband is a police officer. He's been doing it for 10 years and has always wanted to be a k-9 handler. Due to the economy though, his last department and his present department did away with a lot of their dogs and he hasn't had the opportunity. When we got Vader, we were told that he wouldn't be able to use him on patrol because they were only wanting drug detection dogs...no more bite dogs. We were fine with that and decided to train Vader to be a ppd. Well, last night my husband was approached by his captain and found out that once Vader is old enough, he may be used as a patrol dog. Of course it will depend on how his training goes but we are really excited. So now it seems we will be switching gears from focusing on ppd work to detection and tracking work. We will be consulting with some trainers and luckily we have access to tons of training tools through the department. I will keep you guys posted as he progresses but we are really excited about this
Hi Olivia, As the wife of a retired police officer, I wish only the best for your husband and that beautiful pup! I'll keep my paws crossed that he developes into the perfect partner for your husband.
Thanks One of the k-9 officers came over last night to see and play with him. He said he is a gorgeous example of the breed and seems to have a great mind. I'm such a proud mama lol....I know it will be a long road but we are ready for the challenge. We want to give him every opportunity to reach his full potential.
