I thought I'd put a few pics of Zuki and the kittens... I also have a question. What do you tell a dog? Never touch them or touch them but don't swallow one? She is always putting her mouth over them. never biting down really and I don't want her learn bad habits. When their eyes were closed she would only lick them but now that they play she treats them a bit like live toys. They NEVER object. They are content to be her rug
Raising kittens with dogs has always brought a two fold problem for me.
I love to have them accept each other but.....
You have to be mindful that the dog goes too far and injures an overly trusting kitty.
You have to be mindful of the kittens learning to be too trusting of dogs and then encountering a dog that does more than mouth.
Since being a teen on a farm we had a couple of dogs that were entirely trustworthy with kittens. Farm= dumped cats....we had thirty four one summer. Then the trusting kittys ran into neighboring dogs and got killed.
Like climbing up onto a warm engine block I don't let kittens play that way or dogs "mouth" kittens....or other small creatures.
I have to say I never really got any specific training done on it other than a generic "leave it" especially if they were getting too enthusiastic.
I also totally discourage mouthing, and my dogs know what Gentle means. Nico is fine with the cats and lets them do whatever they want while totally ignoring them.
Loki can get a little bit persnickety, but oddly enough ever since he got in trouble for correcting the cat with his mouth he has been more playful with them.
I think maybe he was testing his rank and once being told exactly where it was he has relaxed more with them. I still do not allow them to sleep with him or bother him though.
Instead of discouraging mouthing/licking/sniffing too much I let my dogs approach our most dog-friendly cat with "good Dog, good Cat" - mark - treat and lead the dog away before any other behaviors occur. Worked so far. Some dogs and some cats will never be friends, though, no amount of Nag Champa can cure that.
