Hi all, i am shopping for more dvd's and have decided on the marker training to go along with the basic obedience I already have, and also to add michael ellis's dvd on food. I need the info in the tug video for the OUT since my dog has a bad or non-existent OUT most of the time. it is worth it to me for just that. My question is, I seem to recall something about not playing tug with a pet to counteract dominance issues. This is a concern for me since I have a 13 month old male rottie. Should I use the OUT info, but skip the rest of the video? I do not intend to do real working dog work(bite work, shutz., etc) with him, just a well-trained dog, with future aspirations for therapy or service work.
Tug play is beneficial for most dogs, pets or sport. There are certain kinds of dogs this is not recommended for, for example for a highly reactive dog it is not a good idea to condition biting something as reaction to stress.
If you have good relationship with your dog and tug is all play between you and your dog it is a great way to have interactive exercise and strengthen the bond.
For dogs that are more toy than food motivated tug could be used as reward in OB.
All 3 of my pet dogs play tug and love it
"You always have to win" actually makes it less fun for the dog and he might not want to play if it's all about you possessing the toy.
Playing tug with a Rottie is fine, providing you set the ground rules first. If you have your Pack Structure right it's a great game for you and him.
My Rottie Connor is intact and now 3 years old. He LOVES playing tug, gets really focussed on it but will always OUT when told. (Knowing the game starts again helps).
If I were you, I'd get 3 things on your shopping list:
Establishing Pack Structure DVD
Playing Tug DVD
Intermediate Tug set.
We also have the larger 2 handled tug and a bite pillow, but you don't need to start with them.
You don't need the Tug dvd to train the out alone. There is no need to worry about dominance issue in playing tug if it's done correctly.
I'd really recommend reading the 'Pack Structure' e-book and getting the dvd, then moving onto the tug dvd.
Your Rottie will love it!
