I am new to this forum and I know a ton of people get bashed on here but I need some general good advice from someone with experience! My Czech GSD is in labor and has been for 22 hours. She had 4 pups, then went from 7am to 3pm with no more pups and then had 2 more. I am almost positive there are more in there. She doesn't seem to be in any pain or in distress or anything like that. I just know dogs normally don't labor for more than 24 hours so I am starting to get a bit concerned. My other question is that the first born pup bled a lot when the umbilical cord was cut by the mom but it did finally stop. Now the pup is pretty weak, I did get her to nurse a few times but she is not eager like the others. Should I give her karo syrup and if so how should I administer it? This is my second time whelping a litter and I didn't have any issues the last time so this is new to me! The other problem is the vets are closed and the only on call vet in my area is a complete crook. Any help would be appreciated
I don't have any real advice for you, but someone will come along and help.
Do you have any milk replacement or goats milk in a can?
I don't know about Karo, I will do some googling for you and see what I can find.
There is also a recipe on the main part of the site for milk replacer for pups...off to find it for you.
ETA: my gut tells me that plain pedialyte might be helpful for this too if the pup is dehydrated. If I didn't have a bottle I would try a couple drops with an eye dropper or tiny medicine syringe. But done carefully so the pup doesn't aspirate it.
I promise we don't bite, it only seems that way because the people here generally the dog's welfare before the people
Thank you. I have the recipe for the replacement milk. I don't know if I should because she is drinking some from the mother but my issue is more her lack of interest in wanting more.. the others seem to want it a lot more often.
I know this is my fault but I was actually planning on going out today for the goats milk and she went into labor last night which is almost a week early. I wasn't expecting that and now I can't go to the store and leave her unattended.

Are we talking hard labor with zero progress since the last pup? How many hours has it been since the last puppy and is she still pushing?
Sometimes a short walk can get things moving (take a towel with you just in case.)
I'd just continue to put that pup on mom and keep them warm. I don't think you need karo or that it would help. I use karo for crashing blood sugar in toy puppies which appears as extreme lethargy while otherwise hydrated.
Hi Julie, I know you may not like the vet that is open, but maybe you could call, and find out what the cost for an emergency exam & perhaps an x-ray would be. If it's been this long, and you are concerned, and think there are more pups, and didn't have an x-ray done beforehand, then there is always that possibility of serious complications. Complications which left unattended, could be life threatening for your dog, and even more expensive at a normal clinic, than a quick exam and x-ray at an emerg clinic.
I don't mean to "bash" you, I'm just passing on what I know from experience working in both an emergency vet and a regular vet, and having seen this scenario play out both ways.
thank you. You probably posted that before seeing what I wrote above but she did just push out another finally. I was trying to avoid the xray mainly because I don't want to stress them all out by dragging them to the vet if I don't have to..
Yeah I didn't see that. That is good that she has got another one out. How does she seem now? Any more contractions? For the weak puppy, I would just keep trying to latch her on, and make she she is warm. It's all you can do, at this point I think.
