Hi I am training with a K9 unit in Australia and I had a quick question for you guys.
Is it possible for a dog to track an offender through beach sand? we had an offender run onto the beach a while back. The dog indicated loss of track on the dry sand, however was able to regain the track further along the beach where the sand was damp what are your thoughts?
While it's possible to track in dry sand, (of course visual is also very effective) it's not the easiest of tasks. I would say the dog picked the track back up in the wet sand because moisture does hold scent long than a dry surface.

Any behavior that is reinforced is more likely to occur again.
Never thought much about sand tracking. Not being a seasoned tracker, I may have thought the scent might get caught in between the grains of sand therefore making it an easy track so very interesting and good information.
