I'll admit it...I was one of those people who thought prongs were somewhat cruel and thought I would never use one. I guess because I've really only seen them used improperly and I had a bad view of them. Plus, I grew up with ultra sensitive shelties who probably would have had a heart attack if we had used one on them! Anyways, after Vader was becoming stubborn and more difficult to handle, we broke down and bought a prong. I made sure we knew how to use it correctly, and WOW! He's like a different dog!!! After only a few corrections he behaves like a pro now. He instantly responds to commands, doesn't pull at all when walking, and is much easier to handle in public. Why didn't we get this sooner??!!
That's a pic of it in my pic btw...he sat so nicely despite TONS of distractions in the park.

Those were my thoughts exactly after we got Oscar one... when he was 2! Used properly, makes quite a difference, doesn't it?! We waited so long because we had been specifically warned against them by a positive only OB class instructor... when I finally found Leerburg, I realized what a powerful tool it could be - and not at all in an abusive way - and how much more appropriate it was for my head-strong, large-breed dog than relying solely only on stuffing hotdogs in his face as distraction (obviously, there is a place for many different methods in training, but the prong has been invaluable for us). I love that Ed describes it as "power steering".
The revelation: while it works like a dream, it is so clearly not a device of torture - Oscar is happy to put his on, and even when corrected, he treats the corrections as very effective lessons, not punishments.

Jethro + prong collar = very nice walk
I do mix it up a bit, using different collars to see how much of his behaviour is tied to the collar. I find he needs at least one walk a day on the prong collar, and then I can use other collar arrangements, depending on the activity we are going to do. I'm also finding the dominant dog collar very nice too, and a lot easier to put on and manage.
Even though Jethro's collar is very snug, he has these loose flaps of neck skin and a very thick ruff. The collar still tends to slide down, and it is a real wrestling match to hitch it back up behind his ears.

Jenny, you can also walk him with ALL the collars on at one time - this helps lesson the "getting smart" about which collar he "has to mind".

Thanks to the prong, I can walk my three at once...they are excellent training tools and fantastic for control when you are talking about a group of dogs that weighs more than you.
By the way, I have been meaning to tell you what a stunner Vader is! I have a 6 month old GSD who has a very similar look in his eyes (big trouble)!

I agree with EVERYONE on the prong properly used = amazing. What a difference it made in Koenig. I haven't had mine very long, and we're already transitioning to just a fursaver around home.

Awesome tip! Thanks! My DH thinks I am a little over the top already. Its going to be really funny when he sees me load Jethro up with everything. But it makes perfect sense.

My family think I'm nuts too. When Koenig is at my parents house he's normally in his leather flat collar, with a tab to his prong, and a fursaver. If I owned a e collar, he'd be wearing that, too! I suppose I could attach the tab to the fursaver and prong, and leave off the flat collar... but the flat collar has his ID on it. Then when we track, I take it ALL off, and switch him out to a choke chain. Dad thinks I've lost my marbles.

I work in a shelter where the majority of the dogs are terrible pullers to the point most people wont even walk them. I pop on a prong and enjoy a much more enjoyable, less frusterating walk and am not constantly jerking on the leash or being yanked everywhere. I dont get the people who think they are cruel and refuse to use them and either get dragged all over which is dangerous with a lot of these dogs, or refuse to walk that dog b/c they cant control it....well what about a prong? oh no I could never use one of those.....sigh...

I got Eva from My ex roommate, my ex roommate got her from his friend and his friend got Eva from Kill shelter
Eva is an extreme pull walker.
I got Choke collar when I got Eva. Dog + choke collar in one package
In that time, I dont know how to use choke collar or even prong collar correctly.
Eva get choked couple times.
Till i decide to get her harness, guess what.. it's even worse. She didnt get choked but she pulls me harder.
and it start couple months ago when I learn about prong collar and how to use it properly.
It only takes me less than 30 minutes to learn how to use choke and prong collar correctly..
guess what.. Eva does not pull me anymore
and now I don't need to use prong collar to walk Eva
