How do you know all this, Connie? I didn't know that.
I don't know. I guess from one of the lists online of things that are poisonous to dogs. The SPCA keeps a good updated one, and so do several other sites.
But I also have a ton of dog nutrition books, so I'm not sure where the tomato plant info came from. I do know that I always double- and triple-check this kind of info before posting it. I even look up the exact toxin and what the mechanism is (if known).
Yeah, that is right. Tomatoes are in the nightshade family of plants. Potatoes and I think there are some other fairly common garden plants are in there too (eggplant?). Leaves and stems are very toxic to people and many animals. Don't know what the exact chemical is. I suppose I should learn to use google more.

Yup, very close, in that the nightshade family contain toxic (to one degree or another) alkaloids. Tomatine, though, the glycoalkaloid in the tomato plant, is not found in eggplant, etc.
I think it is found in small quantities in tomatillos, though.
So are the tomatoes (fruit) themselves poisonous? Sorry I know you tried to answer it before, but I'm not understanding it. I have heard they are poisonous to cats... but I can't remember where I heard it from. That and the ASPCA website isn't working for me right now
