My female GS's crotch hair is badly stained dark red almost black. I came across the answer awhile back but have lost the info, I've been searching on line but can't find anything.
I remember something about the diet possible lacking and saliva from licking but I'm not sure.
Does anyone know what causes these dark stains in her crotch hair area?
You are right, saliva can stain... Is she intact? When is she due to come into heat? It could be from her heat cycle discharge staining, and causing her to lick more then normal to keep herself clean?
Any irritation aside from the color change? My older GSD suffers from vaginal fold irritation. We use diaper rash cream to keep the area dry. Occasionally (like right now), she has a flare up that requires a vet trip and prescription cream. It is just the way she is formed anatomically. Keeping her as slim as possible is helpful, but not completely preventative.

My wild guess is that she's licking (which is the cause of the stain) because the area is itching and irritated because of a fungal infection.
The stain itself isn't the problem--it's just giving you a visible clue that something is going on that should be checked. It is not unlike the red stain that some dogs get on a paw that they lick obsessively. You have to find out why they're licking and fix that--then the red stain will go away on its own.
I groom dogs and a large percent of the dogs I groom have some degree or another of staining like this. All appear healthy or and have been checked and nothing is 'wrong'.
Is this a change for her? Then I would be concerned. If it is the same as it has been I would suspect similar to lick or tear staining.
