I did some marker training with my Rottie when we were contemplating doing agility with her (yeah, that was never gonna happen with a huge dog who won't go through a tunnel of any kind!) and I have to say I completely forgot all about it while training JD.
Needless to say, after getting so much great help on here I started with JD today and boy, does it ever make a difference! Things that he was ok at before he is super at now and he catches on to new things twice as fast!
So, my thanks to one and all for reminding me of what a valuable tool this is in training.
Hey Dana, I did agility (just for fun; not speed or competition) with an American Mastiff and at first she wouldn't go near the tunnel.
I left the tunnel part for awhile and taught her how to me crawl instead. Then we squished the tunnel very short and I actually crawled into the tunnel and had her crawl to me. (sorry, no pictures) We gradually lengthen the tunnel until it was finally full length. I knew she had it down pat the day she stopped, laid down and had a nap *in* the tunnel.
Did I mention we weren't doing this for speed? LOL
This was one of the reasons I promoted Shade.
While all dogs really thrive with marker training, the benefits are *especially* pronounced in high drive dogs like Mals.

We tried absolutely everything to get her through a tunnel. She'd always hated anything where she was covered by something - even going behind the couch to get a toy. It was a very unnatural fear and I'm thinking something must have fallen on her as a puppy.
Since she was never going to be a great agility dog and really didn't seem to like it at all, it wasn't worth the stress it was putting her through. We eventually moved over in to rally.
