My dog has been a week on antibiotics for Lyme. His xrays show no signs of arthritis. He is still limping. He can go for walks and was running like a nut in the snow (I should not have encouraged that).
After he has laid down for a while he gets up and really favors the leg for a few minutes. As we go out he stops limping.
I move his paw and leg around, I can't tell if anything is wrong and he does not complain when I do it.
I live in New York City and guess I need to find an orthopedic vet.
What questions do you ask to figure out if they are the right one for your dog?
Are the dogs symptoms consistent with tick borne disease, or would you suspect something else?
Have I treated the dog long enough to rule out tick borne pathology?
Do the radiographs already taken rule out boney disease(HD, arthritis)?
What steps/tests will happen to nail down the source of the lameness?
Perhaps your specialist could look at the films before he sees your dog, giving you a little more time on the antibiotics, and little more rest.
If the dog is only intermittently lame, taking a little video of him rising in the morning or whenever he has the most symptoms, even if it's just with your phone, could really help your vet.
Doug.. My last GSD had very similar problems and it turned out to be arthritis. I wish you luck finding out what it is.
as a arthritis relive for my last GSD I gave him:
Grizzly Fish Oil 2x day (Natural Anti-inflammatory)
Vit E and Vit C (Azmira I believe)
glucosamine & chondroitin (it was an all natural powder don't recall the brand )
that helped him live a pretty normal life after that. I also stopped stairs, jumps and hard wood floors.
Thanks John. I appreciate the reply. Yeah, I am leaning in that direction too. Weird that the xrays didn't show that. Thanks for the list of supplements. Very helpful.
