I am considering a Border Collie puppy from a single pup litter. My concern is the lack of littermate socialization. I like the breeding on this pup (female), who is currently 3 weeks old. If anyone has any experiences or knowledge on how to best raise this pup, I would be very grateful for any information I can get. I am purchasing this dog for AKC competition obedience (not for breeding), and I prefer a dog who is not dominant, and certainly not dog aggressive.
Thanks,
Sandra Davis

What do you like about the breeding? What type of work are the sire/dam involved in? To what level? Does the owner have other dogs the pup can socialize with/learn from?
True dominance with a BC is pretty rare - these are dogs that have been bred for their ability to work with a person.

My air scent SAR dog is a singleton. He is a terrific boy, but has zero dog sense. By that I mean, he loves to socialize with other dogs, but doesn't seem to "get it" as far as manners with them. He's pushy to the point of being obnoxious. He's been socialized with other dogs from the time I brought him home at 8 weeks old. He is not dominant - just has poor dog manners. He'll be 3 yrs old this year.
...I hope that makes sense.

The sire and dam are agility dogs. The breeder has a couple of older CKCs - one is very motherly to the pup. Yes, BCs are bred to work with man and sheep, but I've heard that single pups can be spoiled, creating a pushy, independent, top dog personality. I need to know what the breeder can do and what I, as the new owner of the 8 week old pup should do to help balance the lack of littermate interaction - the give and take, bite inhibition, etc.

YesLani, that does make sense. How do you handle his "obnoxiousness"?

I'd stay away from it if it is an agility bred dog.
I probably wouldn't have an issue with a single pup from solid working parents (stock work, good farm or trial dogs) because they're often brought up around other sensible stock dogs and get a handle on dog manners from them.
Have you had Border Collies before?

Yes, I've had two very good BCs, but they were from average sized litters (6 /7 pups).

Interesting.... This paragraph (except for the SAR part) could describe one of my dogs to a T, right down to the age. But mine came from a litter of four and had a lot of dog/dog interaction from the time he was born, including another litter of three that was in the house at the same time, and two or three other adult females. His being over-sociable to the point of being obnoxious is something that has me very frustrated in my quest to begin showing him at obedience trials.
So I guess this type of personality can happen, singleton or not; and I'm sure not all singltons will be like this.

Mara, he is a german shepherd (http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/german_shepherd_dog/pedigree/589109.html).
I agree, that he could have turned out the same had he come from a litter, with siblings to interact with - it's just been my experience with a singleton vs. pups from larger litters.
