I read this vet's blog sometimes; she talks here about the growing problem of heartworm resistance to ivermectin, etc...(and actual confirmation that it is a real problem, not just owner compliance issues)
I have been one of the unlucky ones who never missed a dose of heartworm preventative and my GSD has heartworms. We just finished our heartworm treatment and are resumeing training now. I will do things very differently from now on. My dogs will be crated in the house before dusk, when mosquitoes come out. I am using Advantage Multi on the 1st of the month and Heartguard on the 15th of the month for the next 6 mo now. I may continue that regiment after as well. I live in Mosquito heaven and we have had several breakthroughs here from people who religiously give preventatives, so it is not just owner neglect.
Lorelei did the heartworm preventative company pay for the cost of treatment? I ask because that is one of the ploys my vet uses to get clients to by the heartworm meds from them and not just get a prescription and buy it elsewhere.
No they did not. I had bought it from Petmeds and they would not cover that stating they could not garuntee the expiration date from that purchase, plus they wanted a years worth of reciepts from my purchases, and I had also gotten some from a friend who switched to Heartguard from Interceptor. When I moved to TN I did not have to buy any for several years due to what I brought with me and my friend giving me his. He switched since he had heard that Heartguard was better. My dog had early stage one /two heartworms so we cought them early. My vet does not care as long as I will use it. He let me know that upfront and instrucued me to keep each box with the date etc from now on if I go that route. You need reciept for a year also if you try that route.
