I am kind of struggling because I am in my internship for ultrasound, and I honestly don't really like it. I should have pursued something with animals. That's my passion. Maybe once I'm making money and seeing more pathology ill enjoy it more? Dogs will just have to be my hobby I guess.
But just out of curiosity...what do ya'll do for a living? Are you working in your passion?

Well, they tell me I'm a nurse It is, however, my ummm let's see....3rd career. I was an executive secretary for Pacific Telesis (worked with Scott Adams the "Dilbert" creator and have my own Dogbert that he drew for me in 1987 before he was a syndicated cartoonist!) took their early pension buyout went back to work in a hospital, joined the Army at 30 and eventually was able to go to nursing school. Went thru the Army's 91C (LPN) school concurrently with my BSN program. Graduated 91C school in '94 and my BSN in '96.
I've been doing this for some 17 years now and can't really see myself doing anything else. My specialty has always been GI nursing and procedures (which I love) but I have taught, done home infusion and been on an IV team. I was also the Medical Director for an Ironman triathlon (the Vineman and Half-Vineman in No. CA) for 7 years. That was a huge accomplishment on my part. Nursing has opened alot of doors for me and when I retire I'd like to work for a vet even if it's on a volunteer basis.
It was alot of hard work but worth every bit of it.

I was at a young age a firefighter/paramedic, an injury stopped that that then I went to surgical technology school, but never really worked at it because I started doing animal control, but I always loved medicine, went to nursing school got my BSN, and am now headed to nurse practioner school, I'd love to go to medical school but I think at this point I'm too old. My REAL passion is horses, I managed many a barn but unless you have money to start with... I always say I went to nursing school so I could afford more horses. JMHO if you don't like it during your internship when everything is new and fresh, chances are you won't like it when you are working at it or real.
My animals are not "like" family, they ARE family. |

Kristi, my cousin works for an independant diagnostics lab, and she often does ultrasounds on animals. She uses my animals as practice, but she's done ultrasounds on just about any animal there is. Is there any way you can get into that kind of thing as well? Jo says she absolutley LOVES it when she gets to do a vet call.
Just a thought

I'm working as a strength and conditioning coach, but I'm about to start a Dog Trainers course to learn more and hopefully get to work at least part time training people and there dogs in some way and if possible make that into my full time job.

I'm a hairdresser.
I have a love/hate relationship with my career choice. Its thouroughly exhausting work. The schedule, while flexible, is weird and it puts me off rythm with everybody in my life. The benefits are crap.
BUT, it is fun, informal and creative. I work in Cambridge, MA, the hub of the worlds most interesting people. The money can be awesome, too.
I think any career choice needs to be made keeping the fact that none of them will ever be perfection. Its about figuring out what you need and finding the best match.

I am truly doing what my passion is. I work in a no kill animal shelter. It is very rewarding and I learn something new everyday. I love seeing the dogs everyday and caring for them and loving them and finding them good homes. It is dirty physical work but I get to wear tshirt and jeans which suits me. I am exhausted by days end but always excited in the morning to go back. The downside is the pay is not really enough to get by certainly not in this city. Thinking of doing some dog walking on the side for extra cash.....
Would love to live out in the country one day and take people out on dogsledding and horseback riding tours, and maybe do some boarding too.
old age means realizing you will never own all the dogs you wanted to- unknown |
