I always like seeing dogs doing what they were bred to do, and this is quite innovative.
I was watching a segment of the 2009 westminster (don't get TV so that was the best I could find), and they mentioned that the anatolian was now being used to guard cheetahs. I was curious, and found this organization which gives livestock guardian dogs (anatolian shepherd and now some kangal) to farmers in Namibia to protect the farmer's livestock against cheetah predation. This program has successfully limited livestock predation, and reduced farmers shooting or poisoning cheetahs. Probably a win-win situation for everyone, as the dogs protect the flocks against all predators, not just cheetahs, and are free for the farmer, with free vet care.
I've always liked anatolians, and what a great use for them. There are other wildlife-human conflicts where a similar livestock-guardian dog program might be effective. Very interesting.

That was sooo cool! Jethro's weight has held steady this month at 80 lb and we think he just turned 1 year old (we don't know his birthdate). Otherwise, he fits the description of the Anatolian perfectly. Watching him run is like watching poetry in motion. Thanks for sharing. The video makes me want to sell my house and buy a farm!
This has been going on for nearly a decade now. I met some Anatolian breeders at a show in either '03 or '04 that were involved in it. They told me the story about the dog who fought off baboons, killing one or two (don't remember exactly), and even though wounded, didn't want to leave his livestock. At the time, I was skeptical, but later the story was confirmed.
Having recently watching a Discovery channel piece that showed a single adult male baboon catching a baby impala and eating it alive, it gives me a new sense of respect for the breed.
