We are a family with two, male 18 month old GS neutered brothers. We have had them since they are 4 months old and they are both wonderful w/our kids. I have noticed over the past few months that they are getting very protective when someone approaches the house. Last month one bit a bike rider and they haven't chased bike riders since they were puppies. Last weekend some friends arrived at out house and my son let the two dogs out of the house w/o my knowledge. One bit one of our friends. I have to curb this behavior now but need some advise on how to do it. Please help.
Just to touch a bit on this, the protective thing is most likely from instinct. I would advice od. training and if they have had this already, further training. Ed has a tape on basic ob. and this is may not be a bad idea to refer to this tape. You are correct on one thing, you need to get a handle on this before a real problem occurs.
I'll take it a step further. You DO already have a problem. For one thing you need to impress upon your son the meaning of not letting the dogs out without your knowledge.
Firm obedience training(seperately) is a good start. How much obedience have they had?
That's such a common misperception among the general public. It seems that whenever their dog shows any aggression, they assume that it's "protectivness".
When you say that these dogs bit one of your friends, how did it happen. This will help in deciding what is going on with these dogs. As correctly pointed out there are diffrent reasons why dogs bite people.
Some real good thoughts posted.
Now, have you ever encouraged these two dogs to BARK at anyone?? Ever use the word WATCH EM?
How about SIC UM? Any of these could be creating your problem. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />
Not trying to be a smart A$$. Just trying to see what's making your two dogs tick. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />
Yes, I agree my 5 year old has to be told not to let the dogs out.
Both dogs have not had any ob. training.
Protectiveness? They will run up to the person approaching the house and get in their way.
