I need some help. I am looking for a source that gives the names and pictures of poisonous weeds in the california-riverside county area. I have gone on line and all I get is poisonous plants. I am looking for weeds. We do not have any plants on the dog side of our yard. Cody stomach is making weird noises and he won't eat now.
He has not been outside since Friday and sat we did have to take him to the emergency vet for throwing up and shivering. He checked out ok, blood work and xrays all good.
since he nearly died last year at the end of january, I am wondering if there a weed that grows up in our yard that is toxic to dogs. We do not use chemicals at all and just keep mowing them until it gets hot, then they are dead within a day. It gets pretty hot here. I looked on the ASPCA and only found plants that are toxic.
Does anyone know of where I could find a list and pictures of toxic weeds?
My dogs have only been out on a leash for 4 days, they are restless and I feel bad they can't run and dig like they usually do. But I want to solve this issue for their sakes. So thanks for the help, I am discouraged today.

poison plants = poison weeds, it's all the same, you just have to scan thru and
find ones that could be in his world.
DOes your country do spraying for fruit flies or anything like that? I remember he was sick as hell last year, no one knew what from but it sounded like a close call.

Dear Betty: Well I did scan and they only talk about plants. Yes, Cody was at deaths door on Jan before last on the 29th. The vet never found the cause. But he lived. Now I am beginning to wonder if it is a weed out in our back. Each day we search our yard for mushrooms and any dead thing someone could have thrown over in our yard or any thing suspicious. We do this before we let the dogs out. We have found many mushroom and I hand pick them. We have weeds but we mow them down low to the ground. We are at our wits end. We hate to see him like this, he is usually very active and you can tell his stomach is bothering him. He won't eat the boiled chicken and rice today. Yesterday he did.
But anyway, I am looking for toxic weed and pictures.
I am now waiting for a call from our emergency vet. Our new vet won't treat him at all unless he sees him, even though he has the report from the emergency vet. It is a new vet, our vet we had for years passed away unexpectedly in dec. So, here we are. Thanks any way. If anyone else has a site, please let me know. thanks sharon.

Total shot in the dark, but I grew up in your neck of the woods and jimson weed grows all over the place, especially disturbed areas, like unmaintained/unwatered yards. I've heard some people call it "morning glory" It's a hallucinogen and very poisonous.
ETA:I don't know a lot about the common weeds, but most of the ones I do know about aren't poisonous.

Dear Kristin: I do not have morning glory, which we know is poisonous, but I will look it up to see if it has a different appearance in weed form. Thank you
We are trying to research to find out what could possibly be affecting Cody.
Thanks again. sharon

Jimson weed isn't the same thing as a morning glory, it just has big white, bell shaped flowers, kinda-sorta similar to morning glories. It doesn't climb at all that I am aware of.
On ehow it says: "The top nine plants that are seriously poisonous to humans in Southern California are angel's trumpet, poison hemlock, jimson weed, foxglove, oleander, tree tobacco, castor bean, English yew and poison oak"
But most of those either aren't low profile plants or I only remember seeing them in the mountains.
This has got to be incredibly heartbreaking and frustrating. I really hope you find the solution to this.

Hey Sharon, I think you may be having trouble finding information because as Betty pointed out the word weed is quite subjective. What might be a weed to you may be something I water as a ground cover. It could possibly be categorized as a plant too. Who knows how the official greenery namers think.
Here’s a bit of a list of what folks see as “weeds” with pictures. Perhaps you can identify yours and then look them up to see if they’re toxic to dogs.
http://landscaping.about.com/od/weedsdiseases/ig/weed-plants/
Or maybe even take pictures on your rounds and perhaps folks could help to identify them. I wouldn’t have a clue but there are a few expert plant folks here.
I hope your little guy is feeling better soon.

You might try "toxic/poisonous native plants" - might help. Also, do you have local Extension offices in your state? If so, take a sample in and ask for help in identification. Good, local garden centers might be of help as well. Also, http://www.gardenweb.com.
Best of luck!

how about toads? Dogs don't usually eat poison plants or weeds. How about mice? Half-dead poisoned mice? Does he eat bird seed? Or bird shit under the bird feeder? Does he dig up flower bulbs? Lily is poisonous. Do you have oleander?People been pruning, leaving sticks of poison shrubs about?
What about antifreeze? Do people in your neighborhood have campers or anything that becomes activated around now, where they might be pouring antifreeze out?
Have you just gone ape-shit cleaning, some household chemical? Someone told me the juice from the Swiffer Wet Jet was toxic....
Just thoughts...
