Anybody seen any authoritative advice about whether it's really better to stop fish oil prior to a dog's oral surgery?
I know that all the "Q&A" and Yahoo type sites say yes, that its blood-thinning mechanism could exacerbate perisurgical bleeding.
But has anyone seen anything up-to-date and authoritative saying that its mild thinning effect trumps its anti-inflammation properties?
This is an old dog, but he has no systemic disorders that I know of.
He has this procedure April 1, so there's plenty of time to make the decision. I plan to ask the vet, too, of course, but I'm hoping to have more than one source.
I take mega-doses of salmon oil, and was advised by the rX-ing doctor that I should cut back to a *normal* dose prior to any surgery, but that I didn't need to discontinue completely.
I take IM injections in the thigh every 10 days and haven't noticed any increased bleeding associated with that.

This is exactly what I hoped to hear.
I mean, saying to quit it entirely sounds to me like saying "no fish for dinner the week before the operation."
I take mega doses, too, but Oliver is on a regular one-gram-per-ten-pounds regimen. Maybe I could consider changing him from two grams a day to one gram a day for a few days pre-surgery.

It really doesn't seem practical.
When you consider that you're just replicating what the natural balance of Omega fatty acids *would* be, I can't imagine why you'd need to stop.
What do you do with an animal that eats only grass-fed beef? Switch him to grain fed before the operation?
In reality, I'd be really hesitant to stop Omega 3s before oral surgery- I'd want to avoid post-op swelling as much as possible.
Really, this is my POV too. With a poultry-based diet, he is nowhere near 1:1 sixes to threes, and probably isn't even quite at 5:1.
He has a weird dental lineup* in that bracheocephalic face. It would be nice to reduce swelling/inflammation as much as possible .
