I finally got a hand held shower head for our second bath and Finn's tub that he gets a bathroom in. I just put on about a week and a half ago some front line. But it still seems, even without the flea stuff, that his coat greases up in about 2 weeks. I did trim his coat down a bit and his ears so he doesn't have that feathery look. I am using shampoo with tea tree oil in it so it helps his itchy skin, still snowy here and dry air makes him itchy. I also furminate about once every 7-10 days because he really doesn't shed all that much.
Is this normal for spaniel coats or should I bath him like every 2 weeks. Btw I haven't done this because it would dry out his skin to much.

Get a decent conditioner and you can wash him every day if you want to.
Try washing him twice and rinsing until the water runs absolutely clear each time. You should see way less grease.
Also old spaniels are really subject to dermatitis of various sorts. If you really notice itchy, flakey, greasy problems you might take him in for a skin scrape.
The tech or vet takes a scalpel blade and draws it sideways across the skin, deep enough to remove skin cells, a bit like the old "skinned knee" we all got as kids.
That sample can be put under the microscope, stained, or that plus cultures. Can see yeast, mange mites, fungal culture. Helps to nail down the cause of the trouble.
Some spaniels are greasy, especially black cocker spaniels IME. I know he's not that breed, but perhaps it runs in the spaniel family. It seems that a coal tar shampoo was recommended, bet the groomers have more modern suggestions.

We still use coal tar shampoos actually. I just prefer not to use them without a diagnosis from a vet. Grease IME is usually a skin yeast infection, especially if it has a funk to it.
Do you guys think all those greasy black cockers had a disease? Lord, I just thought that was how they were..... I know the really funky ones had some yeast going on, (ears) but it seemed like most of them had some greasy feel....Esp. if they weren't groomed regularly.
