We had a huge rainfall all morning on Monday. My backyard is mostly shaded so it took untill Wednesday morning for the ground to dry; not bone dry, just not muddy so I didn't have to wipe paws.

Here's my thought. Water makes nails spongy and soft which can aide with cracking. Add in the dog's weight and play habits and you can create a situation where it's fairly easy that the dog would have nail breaking issues. If you flip over the dog's foot you'll see at the base of the nail where there is a natural part in the nail just after the quick *normally*. If that space is left open it can collect wet debris which can soften the nail further as well.
