kaiser is usually a very mild mannered soft boy. But he has been unbearable the past 3 or 4 days. helga has come into heat and it is driving him nuts, he is constantly whining. ofcourse they have been separated.
He marks the garden like crazy. He even marked once in the porch. Luckly I saw it, told him he was a BAD BOY and have temporarily banished him from even entering the porch, leave alone the house. Day before yesterday, he even marked my leg while I was taking him for a walk. I gave him a very harsh correction on the prong , but felt sorry for him . After all he is under the influence of harmones ( I think)
My question is , should I be using a bark stop collar/e collar on him and correct him every time he whines or should I just let pass and bear it for 21 days till helga goes out of heat.

Are you ever planning to use him for breeding? If so correcting all stud behavior can cause problems later especially with assisted breedings.
I would treat it like other annoying behaviors and redirect where you can. I'd use chew toys and other things that will keep his brain off of her as much as you can. I wouldn't use a bark collar, it's just not fair when he has nothing else occupying his brain.
As far as correcting for marking on you, yeah, I would have probably done the same and praised him for marking on something more appropriate. He has to learn that even if there is a bitch in heat, he still has to work and behave himself while on lead.
Guys, any help is appreciated. It has gotten from bad to worse. Kaiser has not eaten a full meal in 5 days. He has lost total interest in every thing except for helga. Helga is kept out of sight from him for 99% of the time , except when we have to go for a walk. Even then , Kaiser does not get to walk while helga is. ( I take the boys and girls as separate trips).
He is constantly crying and whining and panting and running back and forth. He has access to water and I assume he drinks, but as for food he shows zero interest.
I have stopped training him, except for a sit or a down before we go for a walk.
He howls and whines in the night too. I am thinking of putting him on a bark collar tonight.
Is there anyway by which I can mask the "scent" from helga which I assume is driving him nuts. Can I spray perfume or after shave or some such thing? I am at the end of my rope here.
PS: Female dogs are soooo much better than males. As a new dog owner, I thought it would be a nuisance to deal with females in season, but they are such sweet well behaved things. Kaiser and Kari are obnoxious.(And Kari has been castrated and he whines too).
What about something like Vicks Vapo Rub on HIS nose? I know I've heard of folks putting something on a stallions muzzle to mask the odor of a mare in heat...
I don't think spraying anything on her is going to solve your problem.
I know a breeder who lives with intact males and females. She says that there are times when she has to mildly sedate her males so that they don't waste away while they can think of nothing else.
I don't know if anything masks the scents, really, but I watched an obedience old-timer make her dog eat Certs breath mints with chlorophyll. She insisted that it worked, but I find that hard to believe.
Chlorophyll does work, to some extent. I know a gal who feeds it to her collie bitch while she's in heat so she can continue agility training with the group she's in.
I'm not sure if I'd use the certs breath mints- you can usually find chlorophyll tabs in a pharmacy or drug store.
I just called my friend who has the stallion and yes, she uses Vick's on his nose and just barely on the inside edge of the nostrils when he is around mares in heat. She said it won't hurt, might help. Good luck Ram... sounds like everyone needs a good night's sleep.
I'm not sure that I'd use vicks on a dogs nose- don't you think that'd be super irritating to that sensitive skin? Plus the added potential of him licking it? That stuff can't be good for them to ingest.
