The post office just called me to say that they had just received an overnight delivery for me from __________. The carrier of course is in the middle of her route, and if I didn't want to wait until tomorrow I could come pick it up today.
How cool is that?
And as pathetic as it sounds, it's kinda of like the highlight of my week so far.
Back in the day when Grandma and I were raising chickens, we would order them through the mail.
The post office would call first thing in the morning to say, "Mrs. Koon, we have a package here for you.....and it is chirping....please come get it."
Even though we are only 15 minutes from metropolis, our area functions as a small town. In over seven years I've NEVER been in the post office when I met more than one other individual inside. And the clerk is always pleasant. It is very nice.
ETA: Tuesday evening I had to slow down to let three Peacock hens cross the road. I DID find myself thinking "I wonder if the dogs will eat Peacock?" but I fought the urge and let them pass. Weird.
Michael you can order Turbo some chicks and they will still call you from the Post Office! Your kids would love them too. Cornish Rocks are only 75 cents each. In 6 wks they could be on the grill!
They do not "range" far from the feed. They are delicious though and a fun project for kids, pretty easy to raise. Plus, they soon become ugly enough that you don't mind eating them.
I've read that they will pretty much plant themselves in front of the feed trough and that you need to remove the food 12 hours a day or they'll just gorge themselves... did you have this issue?
You bet. We joked that the reason the kids just wanted to sit and watch TV was because they were raised on chickens that just wanted to sit and eat.
Welp Hatchery has a "slower growing Cornish x" that are great. They are cornish rock, but I didn't have trouble with legs collapsing and they do forage. Sort of a "working line" Cornish x!
