Never thought I'd be writing this...but I actually broke out in what look to be hives today after wrestling with the dog.
He's been making both of us a little itchy lately, but this is a different ballgame.
I have a theory that the hives might be on the area that contacted his nether-regions. I've previously noticed that even getting poked with 'red rocket' will make me itch.
I have NEVER been allergic to dogs, not even as recently as Summer 2009. But here I am, covered in red, blotchy patches of raised bumps.
Allergies likely? Or is this a problem with the dog that I need to tackle on a dietary level? The reason I ask is because I did buy him a different bag of food on my last trip to the feed store and it's definitely intensified since then.
This occasionally happens to me too, I am somewhat allergic to dogs, but usually my own do not bother me. I haven't ended up with full blown hives, but I do get all red and itchy sometimes especially on my inner arms or neck if they rubs all over me.
Usually bathing them will help remove the dander and oils and stop the itching.
I'm mildly allergic to dog hair (though not Greyhound fur for some reason) and have regularly had red itchy patches on my arms after hugging the dog, bathing the dog, etc. I take allergy meds and they've helped a lot.
I also noticed that I develop some sort of immunity to my own dogs within a few weeks in terms of respiratory symptoms and itchy eyes, but will still react to other peoples' dogs (not that it's ever prevented me from being around them though).
I will say that switching my dog to a raw diet has just about eliminated MY itchy skin, so I'm guessing diet can be a factor. I'm curious if anybody knows anything about this too?
If that is what it is, cleaning the area wouldn't affect it, because what you're allergic to is a protein he produces, that cleaning won't get rid of.
But that's assuming that it isn't a more generalized allergy, either to dogs, or to something that he's picking up in the yard like grass or tree pollen, which would tend to aggregate on his belly when he walks around.
Avoiding contact with the area, and washing your hands/arms after playing with him would help.
Wiping him down with plain water would help- rubbing alcohol only kills bacteria, it doesn't get rid of allergens, and would probably sting like heck.
