He doesn't have any toys laying around. He gets the occassional bully stick but those are about 6" long and gone in under five minutes, unfortunately. The love of his life is a Chuckit Flying Squirrel but of course that is something we play with together. I feed mostly chicken leg quarters, turkey necks and ground beef. He also gets an occassional RMB but he doesn't really "eat" the bone like our other dog does; he just tries to lick the marrow out... that is why I'm asking about the wear; I don't see the behavior which would account for it! His nails are VERY hard in comparison to our other dog, for what that is worth.
We play tug with the squirrel, which probably accounts why we buy so many... SOME play with dog tennis balls when he was younger, but he so prefers the squirrel not even that much ball playing in comparison. He did go through a few of the large Jolly Balls... they punctured so fast it wasn't even funny.
I remember Aaron talking in the past about genetics and teeth, so my best guess is that is what we are dealing with.
Thanks guys.
Any thoughts or input is welcomed, but I don't see the need to start grinding his meals yet.
Are his toys dirty when you play with them? As they pick up dirt they can become more abrasive on the teeth.
Hard nails are most likely because of the protein/collagen in his raw diet - Missy's are the same way!
We don't leave the squirrels outside when not in use... they are carefully brought inside the garage and locked in the vault for safe keeping. Just kidding, but they are brought inside.
Our older dog's (8 yrs)nails are so much easier to dremel than are Falcon's, and they eat the same diet, but Sadie was 6 when we started feeding raw so that might account for the difference... and probably genetics as well.
This just struck me... we do put Gorilla tape (layers by the time it is ready to be chucked in the circular file) on the four corners of the squirrels because of Falcon's love of chewing them as he is bringing them back (running back and chewing like mad... dork!) MAYBE that?
