For me, I think my people skills are better because of working with my dogs. I am a huge introvert, but it's a whole lot easier getting out and about when it has to do something with dogs.
When I started getting out and doing dog stuff, I had something to focus on besides "how am I going to interact in the situation?" It became simple, just focus on the dog. Great conversation starter, if she got uncomfortable, I had a reason to get out
I find a lot of similarities between working with people and working with dogs. I was trying to explain the finer points of people skills to a brother yesterday and why his chosen method wasn't the most effective. My explanation? he was always correcting instead of teaching. As soon as I said it I thought - that's exactly the argument I'd use in a dog training scenario
I guess my conclusion is that while I'm still not a huge people person I'm a better people person because of working with my dogs.
Do well with my animals, they like the blank ans white stuff. People find me way to direct at times. Like this was just bad, try again.
My students like it because progress happen and what is expected of them is clear. Those who don't want to learn don't stay with me very long. I just can't sugar coat.

This is true for me too, and it is true for all creatures. I have a horse that is from a terrible rescue situation. I used to make excuses for her behavior. But now, partially from what I've learned on this board, I recognize that not expecting the best from my creatures translates to a lack of respect.
I just started a new job, being able to talk dogs with the other people really helped break the ice. I am not in the pet industry, but even the guys were busting out their phones to show me pictures of their dogs
We are also just about the only dog friendly bar in town on saturday I think 8 out of 10 tables had a pup with them not to mention all the ones out walking and at the park playing who stop in to get a drink or some lunch. So being able to get down and love on the customers dogs helps build a relationship with them and translates to better money for me.
While I feel I have people skills, I don't prefer to use them. Instead of socializing with people I find it much more relaxing to hang out with my dogs or horses. They won't go tell the world if I say something they don't like. I think I even prefer my cows over humans most days! Unless of course the humans talk ABOUT animals. Then I can handle it
