Hi , I am a new member to the forum. I own two american bulldogs and have purchased a few vids. Last night i was looking at National Geographic and i saw a Cop with his German Sheperd being attached by someone being arrested. They highlighted the dog struggling to get a good bite at the person being arrested , in one instant the dog bit the clothing jacket and the guy wrigled out of it.
What was said after was what interest me. They showed the K( unit doing training that they said was more modern training using "Muzzle Training" for their police dogs which they said will train the dog in not being accustomed to the "suit" when in the line of duty in the real world.
The dog was outfitted with a soft muzzle and the training was done with the helper. This is the first time i saw this and i am amazed that i havent seen it anywhere before or even mentioned here.
Anyone can share any info on this "modern approach" to this type of training ?
I don't know anything about this type of training but I have noticed this dvd in the Leerburg catalog. I'm not sure if this is the same type of training you were explaining. http://leerburg.com/121.htm
For PPDs, we practice with muzzle work to let them have the experience of fighting a decoy who's not wearing protective gear. It's best for teaching the dog ground work, as a dog doing a longer apprehension with a muzzle can injure the decoy due to the blunt force impact of a muzzle strike ( I speak from experience here, my friends Mal gave me a green stick fracture of my forearm doing this....learn from my mistakes! )
My dog Fetz was pictured on an older Leerburg catalog cover doing muzzles attacks.
I sent for a dvd just out of curiosity for the Tom Rose School, there was a short clip of some muzzle fighting it didn't look very fun to be the helper! lol Tenzin has knocked the wind out of me a few times playing tug I can't imagine what a capable Mal or GSD would feel like!
In the British Army training a dog to attack with a muzzle is an important part of the training for the dog, its nothing new, the dog has to learn it is not the suit or a sleave he is being trained to attack but the person
