It's really worth the time to read it! Seriously! Wether you own the breed, admire the breed from a respectable distance, or strive to own one someday, it's a nice article.
As I coincidentally posted in another thread, I really respect Francis Metcalf and I think this article is pretty darn good. The part I quibble with is the point that unless you are going to do bitework sports, you should skip the mali and and get a BC. I don't agree with that statement.
I know plenty of serious competitors that do agility etc with mals and there is nothing incomplete about their temperaments. They use tugs etc and channel the dogs' drives into the specific sports they do. The dogs get the physical and mental stimulation they need and love the sports they compete in.
Mals are definately not for everyone and I do loathe the idea of people getting them on a whim based on the reading of an article or a news report but they can have full lives without stepping in the ringsport or schutzhund arenas - at least in my opinion.

I agree 100% Ingrid. I think the author went out on a ledge with that statement. They can be very satisfied (tired) dogs without ever latching on to someone's arm or leg.

I too agree on this statement. I'm in a battle with myself as to wether I want a German Shepherd or a Malinois...I have always dreamed of a German Shepherd trained in Schutzhund or Mondio Ring, but the more I have found about Malinois's makes me thin that they are the dog for me...Such a hard descision!!!
I really enjoyed this article, thank you for sharing!
I'm really hoping the spotlight doesn't result in Malinois being added to the list of legislated breeds. It seems most people had no idea what one was until now...
According to this, a person in India cannot have a Belgian since we do not have ring sport or any dog sports. I understand his sentiment, but I dont agree.
Some time in my life, I wish to have and train a Dutch shepherd. Sadly there are no dutch shepherd breeders in India currently.
I am confident that I can train him/her to be an amenable guard and pet with out any bite sport.

To late, Belgians have already made it onto some of the banned lists in various cities, and also with various insurance companies. :-( This started a few years ago, although recent developments may increase the number of lists they are on.
I think it will definitely increase the number of inappropriate homes looking for a Malinois.
