So, I have no experience with THK. I know that it is dehydrated raw, and that it is bad to mix raw with kibble. So, if I'm switching from kibble to THK, is it generally advised to mix in THK slowly with the kibble, or...?
Note - plan is to feed THK, then with cooked chicken first, then with RMBs.
The general recommendation is slowly and you can mix it in with the kibble because any pathogens in the meat have been killed off. If you have a really sensitive dog, I'd go slowly, iron gut dog, I'd just switch.
BUT, FWIW I've started giving my sensitive-as-all-get-out dog a morning meal of THK (with her kibble at night) and she does just fine with it. I started her off with about 1/3 (rehydrated with about 1 cup water) and she had no issue at all with it.
I think that in healthy dogs iron gut can be cultivated. So going slow makes sense to me.
Observing farm dogs I find that when they begin to eat a new "disgusting" item it often produces soft stool, but over time the stool firms up.
I am becoming a proponent of rinsing and rinsing commercial chicken, I think it's loaded with bacteria and believe that the skin causes GI upset not from the fat but from the filth on the surface. I now stay away from super cheap hamburger and ground turkey for raw feeding. JMO.
So, I've been trying to switch Mucha over from the kibble to THK and cooked chicken since Monday. He loves the chicken, but is not liking the Thrive very much. He's not very food motivated at all actually, and really doesn't eat that much, so I'm having a bit of a dilemma. I'm almost out of the kibble that was sent to me by the breeder, and it's something obscure (called "nature nuggets" I believe), which as far as I can find, is not available here at all.
I am thinking of switching him to raw, because I am confident that he would eat it, and it's better for him than just cooked chicken with bits of THK. Input?
