First let me say this dog is wonderful Unless, of course, anybody comes over or walks past our front window! We got him from the Humane Society and the first time I met him he immediately cowered and went under a desk. When we got him home he seemed to fit in beautifully. He got along well with our older dog, and we all fell in love with him. He's never been aggressive towards anyone in our family, but we've had issues with food aggression, toy/bone aggression, and serious problems anytime someone comes to visit. When the doorbell rings he immediately turns into a different dog. The hair stands up, the growling and barking begin, and he must be leashed or put in his crate. I don't even know where to start with him, but I'll take any and all suggestions. There is no way I'll give up on this dog!!
You need to get the video on pack structure with the family pet sold here http://leerburg.com/308.htm. This is a rank issue, the dog is telling you something you just don't know how to listen yet. Food and toy aggression can be a sign of dominance. You need to teach this dog his place in your family pack, and yes the dog see's you and your family as a pack. Read Ed's free articles here http://leerburg.com/pdf/packstructure.pdf he has hundreds of free info on this website use the search bar. We need more info on what his reactions are to you and your family. Is he challenging you at the food bowl and for toys? Is it all of you he challenging? Is it only during feeding? Are you playing tug with him? What is the breed or breed mix? Can you post a picture? You say "he's never been aggressive towards our family" and yet you say he has food aggression and toy aggression is this only pointed at the other dog then? How experienced are you with dogs is this your first? And many more to come!!
