I switched from Frontline Plus,* early last year, to Interceptor at the suggestion of my holistic/chiro vet. She said it is in the same drug 'family' & she likes it better then the heartguard. It also protects against a few more parisites. I am still getting negative SNAP tests with it's use.
I can't remember exactly how she put it...but made some comment about the flavoring used & some dogs with allergies having a problem with it.
There may be some different recomendations by vets depending on what part of the country you live, as well has more then 1x a month & year round dosages.
Thanks Anne. I do the Heartguard year round right now. Is Interceptor oral or topical? Does Interceptor do fleas as well since you are no longer using Frontline Plus?
Currently for my dogs west of the TN river they are on Heartguard on the 1st and Advantage on the 15th. Auburn U. is currently doing some studies of resistance to medication or strains of microfilaria that are resistant to the current medications. Heartworm, as has been discussed in other threads, is a serious problem in an area from Eastern AR - West TN and South to the Mississippi Delta area for dogs that are on a monthly preventative schedule.

I use Interceptor (it is an oral tab)in place of the Heartguard Plus. I use it year round. It is a broad spectrum parasiticide.
I use Front Line Plus for fleas, ticks etc. I also use that year roumd.
We have started to have much longer warm seasons & with the exception of this winter, where we had record amounts of snow, for the first time in many years...warmer winters.
Ticks have long since become a year round issue here. I have pulled ticks off my horse in January & Febuary almost yearly for years. The snow cover is not enough to kill them especially since we don't have months of deep freezes anymore.

Just to update this topic, there is an excellent new article related to the medications losing effectiveness. It is in the Whole Dog Journal's July,2011 issue. If you are interested in this issue, I think it is worth a look.
My vet had recommended Revolution for my previous dog and I had some left over so I've been using it for my current dog. I checked with my vet and she weighs enough to be using the Plum coloured box. We have cold enough winters to kill everything so I usually don't start it until May.
Does anybody have any good reasons to use something other than Revolution?
