Ever have guilt over time with dogs?

I missed a meeting last night because I was transporting a Mom and three pups to a foster home. It was last night or to the shelter. These are 4 week old pups that would most likely get sick in short order and be put down in that environment.
I was confronted by someone close to me about the time I put into my dogs and rescue and that it was keeping me from spending time in other areas of my life.
Even if I didn't work in rescue, because I also work, I HAVE to give a lot of time to my dogs. I love them and I enjoy it. Plus, the rescue is really important to me and it's really not that time consuming. Mostly, it's just the fact of having dogs requiring me to stay home evenings and weekends to give them what they need.
I guess I'm just venting. This really hurt my feelings. I work hard, I'm raising great kids and am involved with my community. Why is it a problem if I put my spare time into something I love AND that benefits everyone?? I know I'm not saving the world, but it's important to me.
Vent over. Thanks.
disclaimer: I am not anti-shelter, and I believe euthanasia is preferable to some other outcomes.

Never. All the time gets justified when you get that one person compliment you on how happy, well behaved or under control your dog is. It makes all those hours worthwhile. The only time I ever feel guilt is when I'm not spending more time with them. We get more enjoyment and satisfaction out of working and playing with our dogs than we ever did with out children, who are now grown and out of the house. Now, that's something to feel guilty about.
Sounds like you are doing something that you can be very proud of. I wouldn't worry about someone being critical over such a worthwhile endeavour.

Nope. I never feel guilty about the amount of time I spend with my dogs. Heck, I wish I could spend more time with them.
Everyone should have something in their life that they are passionate about. For me (and you), it's dogs. For other people it's their kids, job, church, or reality TV shows. To each his own priorities. I don't tell people how to live their lives, and I wouldn't pay a bit of attention to somebody trying to tell me how to live mine. Tell the busybody to mind their own knitting.

Nope.
Couldn't care less if someone with no business of their own to mind thinks mine is theirs to assess and evaluate.

I agree, we all need things in our lives that we are passionate about, that bring us personal satisfaction and fulfillment. That's different things for different people, and chances are that our family members or friends may not share our particular love for dogs or our desire to volunteer for rescue. But then again, maybe we don't share their passion for crossword puzzles, or tinkering with old cars, or gardening. You get the picture.
So don't feel guilty, Janet! Heck, if anything, I feel guilty about not spending enough time with my dogs.

I agree with Tracy and Connie of course but just another thing to consider with this person close to you, Janet - IMHO some folks can say things like this out of a bit of jealousy or guilt around active volunteers.
You are doing amazing work and are obviously keeping all balls in the air admirably -that you make significant sacrifices and give your time selflessly in this way can make others look at themselves and how they chose to use free time a bit more critically. When that gets uncomfortable they may disparage your choices...
Hope mom and pups are doing well in their new home and keep up all your important work!

It's as previous posters have commented, everyone has their own passions. I have a friend who goes to the gym twice a day. Not my cup of tea, but my 2 dogs certainly are.
You can't pay attention to other peoples' comments. They are usually mean spirited. I think Leerburg ought to sell the T-Shirt that says, "compared to mose people, I prefer my dogs."
Never, ever feel guilty.

Thanks guys.
I guess it just caught me off guard because I really value this person's input.
I love my dogs and I love voulunteering. The time I spend with them has been rewarding in ways I never imagined. My husband and children are supportive. I guess that's all that matters.
At least I'm FINALLY taking a vacation this year...and guess who's coming...LOL.
Hilarie, the mom and puppies are fine. They are in such a better situation, and the mom is so sweet...only a year old herself.
Thanks again.

Hey - careful with the knitting comments!!!
But yeah, I agree with this. Life should be enjoyed!!
And I've never felt guilty about spending time with my dogs. Sometimes feel guilty about not spending enough time with them, but never the other way around.
