Is there a way to prevent or limit the calluses that dogs sometimes get on their elbows? Seems that Cicero may be starting to get some and I would like to stop them if I can. Now I live in an apartment that is 90% carpet and unless he is laying in the kitchen on the linoleum while I am not home he mostly lays on carpet or on his bed.
The cushioned surface will be the best for preventing them, or having them get worse. I had a recue Lab that had cracked callusoses that would bleed, so I would put Mushers Secret on them to softnen them up. Pressure and friction cause them to develop, I think you'll notice a huge improvemnt now that he is on a carpeted area.
Mine have them too. I have hardwood floors. Even though their are 2 beds in each room...they like to lay on the floor, especially in the warmer weather. They also spend alot of time out in the yard & on the deck.
Sorry I wasn't clear he's been on carpet his whole life so I'm not exactly sure why they are forming at all. I don't even have hardwood floors for him to lay on.
It's really a normal thing in a large dog, usually not a problem, so may be more work to prevent them than is reasonable. I deal w/it like I deal w/my callused heels... rub a little lotion in to keep them from getting too hard & carry on.
Elizabeth, the bag balm helps. It is a bit greasey..but I had it in the house. I have the Mushers Secret also, but never thought of putting that on her elbows, as Tammy nentioned. It would be less messy.
But you could use any lubricating topical. Some will be 'messier' then others & some will be more moistening then others. My female's were cracked & one has some bleeding, so I wanted something that would penetrate quickly & deeply. Vasaline would work, also.
The Mushers Secret is far less messy, and harder to lick off. The Lab I took in had very large, cracked, bleeding elbows, kinda resembled a baboon’s butt, just nasty!
The best results I got was from this product http://www.amazon.com/Lansinoh-Breast-Cream-2-Ounce-Bottle/dp/B000067DYG
You can find it at most places that carry baby supplies. I figured at the time it was safe for a baby, must be ok for a dog, but I never researched it, check it out first.
I'd only resort to that for cracked & bleeding, the other things mentioned first.
