Hi everyone,
My puppy has been itching since I brought her home. Targeted areas started with the abdomen but have since moved to armpits, base of tail, stomach, abdomen, & back of front legs. It has gotten bad enough to where fur will come off, but she does sleep. Right now, she just gets bloody from the constant scratching.
The vet suggested mange but treating her for that didnt' help. I figured I'd ask again here before going back to the vet.
I feel bad for her always itching. Any ideas?
PS I read Nick's post about his puppy and thought perhaps it was a flea allergy. She's on frontline & I haven't seen any fleas on her, but it's still a possibility.

Hello Megan, how old is your puppy? Were there any skin scrapings done at the vet that revealed any mange?
There can be several causes of itching. Fleas are often the culprit, and if the dog is flea bite sensitive, even one bite can make a dog incredibly itchy.
I would start by getting a flea comb at the store and using a white sheet underneath and start by looking for flea dirt.
They usually look like flecks of black pepper and when they come into contact with a little water, will turn red. This would indicate fleas.
If you see this, I would suggest an all natural product to rid the pup of fleas. I like something like this one:

But if you do not see any flea dirt, you might still want to give the pup a bath anyway, just to get off what ever the pup has come in contact with.
ETA: Also, make sure the pups nails are trimmed helping to make them less sharp. Dull nails will do less damage to the skin.

My money (from the body geography) is tentatively on fleas, with the info so far. Let us know about Joyce's white-sheet-test result and we can go on from here.
There is no odor, right?

Joyce,
My puppy is 14 weeks (15 this thurs).
She did not have a skin scraping because the vet said it's very expensive and it often comes back negative many times before you find the positive. She was treated with Revolution about a month ago.
She's been checked for fleas at 8 weeks and 13 weeks with a comb and nothing was found despite the itching. We have a cat and another older dog in the same house who haven't shown symptoms of fleas (not sure if that would matter?).
Thanks for your help and the advice on the nails, I'll definitely do that.

I'll let you know the results later this afternoon from the flea-test.
Connie, what sort of odor would it be?

Nasty, possibly yeasty-rotten. Occasionally just yeasty (a little like corn chips).

Ok the flea-test didn't yield any dirt on the white paper. Ah ok I would probably notice a smell like that, so no, she just smells like puppy lol.

What treatment was done for the (possible) mange and how long was it done for?
It could also be seasonal/enviormental allergies. Seasonal allergies tend to hit the belly, paws, and face and elsewhere on the body. Food allergys tend to be the "ears and rears". I might try to give him benadryl, and possibly add in fish oils, and vitiam C if they are not already added. I would also wipe her down daily with a damp towel to rid any allergens. Make sure to wipe down the places she itches.

Cassie,
She's been on Revolution for about a month.
I tried children's benadryl with little success, but that was a few weeks ago. Yes wiping her down maybe would help, I just wish I knew if they were allergies, or what kind of allergies!

Revolution ONLY kills/prevent Scarcoptic Mange "Scabies". It does not kill/prevent Demodex Mange. Demodex is an immune system problem and it does not transmit to humans/other animals (not zoonotic) Demodex is usually very not prutic (itchy) so I'm not sure about that one but still should be ruled out.
There is allergy testing. It is expensive about $300, and most vets will recommend you do allergy shots if they are seasonal. Here is the link incase you may be interseted http://www.nelcovet.com/
