I have a friend that makes and sells dog carts for people to ride in. His female Mal was able to pull my 250 # frame down the road. It was a ton of fun but I'm a bit concerned for the dogs hips. What do you guys think of carting ?
Totally not an authority and hopefully more structural experts will chime in but from the research and dabbling I’ve done; I think it’s a great activity.
Of course properly fitting harnesses and appropriately constructed carts are a must, making the activity safer and more enjoyable for the dog. It sounds like you’re linked in with a friend that’s aware of all that though.
I wouldn’t start a dog with any substantial weight until at least 18 months, building up to your weight over time.
Sounds like you had a good time. It sure is a lot of fun.
Once upon a time horses were like cars - many people didn't have the money for a good one, and the crappy ones cost too much money to repair. Enter the carting dog. Cheaper to feed and maintain than a horse and many of the carting breeds also excelled at most farm work and protecting the family farm. Think about the Rottweiler or the Greater Swiss Mountain dog - both are great at many things, including carting.
