Obviously the best thing to have done was to insist on having registration papers given to me when I picked up my pup in April, but that's water under the bridge now.
Now the dogs from this litter are 4.5 months old and the AKC says the litter hasn't even been registered yet. The woman who's dog I admire and was the reason I bought Radar from this man told me from the start that it took 'a while' for him to get the papers to them, but it didn't take this long.
He hasn't returned my phone calls, texts, or emails (all friendly and just updates on the pup) in about a month. I'm in contact with a woman who bought Radar's brother and she's not sure how to approach the breeder about this and neither am I. What can we do?
Is it possible to maybe just call the breeder and mention that 'Oh, by the way, Radar's registration application hasn't come in yet. Is it possible it got lost in the mail?' or something along those lines. I'm trying to think of a way to not put her/him on the defensive.
Is there anything in the purchase contract regarding paperwork?

Are both the parents registered with AKC or was one or both imported? Sometimes getting a foreign registered dog registered with AKC can be a pain, you are at the mercy of whoever you imported the dog from and they have long spent the money. Took me two years to get Raya registered.
If you have a contract stating that the dogs are being sold registered AKC will sometimes contact the breeder.
Faisal, if she bought a registered pup she could get a registered pup.....
Why do I need papers? Because I want them, and according to my contract and our verbal agreement before the contract I am entitled to them.
The breeder has bred these two dogs before and all of those litters, as far as I understand, have been registered.
I've contacted the breeder in a friendly way for the past month but haven't heard anything from him. My phone calls and texts go unanswered and the last time I got an email from him was in mid May.
The contract I signed does indeed say that the pups are being sold as being able to be registered with the AKC. It also states that he has stud rights to my dog pending titles and health tests. I'm not saying this guy is crooked, but I am frustrated that he's dragging his heels and won't even communicate his reasons.
It took 2 years to get the 'papers' on my male. Father was BSP winner in Germany, then went to Belgium & was bred to the bitch(got her papers settled with in a couple of months) that was then imported into the US pregnant. Father was then studded out/moved/sold several times & ended up in Trinadad (of all places) & had to be chased down for DNA sample & signing of AKC papers to register father & then his litter. What a PITA!!
It also states that he has stud rights to my dog pending titles and health tests. I'm not saying this guy is crooked, but I am frustrated that he's dragging his heels and won't even communicate his reasons.
Sounds like you agreed to a "limited registration". Question is are the sire and dam also on limited registration? http://www.akc.org/reg/limitedreg.cfm
I had that happen with two of our dogs (two different breeders). Firm conversations and LOTS OF NASTINESS ON THE PART OF ONE BREEDER, but we finally got the papers on both dogs.
If you want to make sure you get the papers, don't take the pup without getting them. It's a lesson I learned. My pup is over a year old and I still don't have his papers.
