Took the dogs out first thing this AM as I always do. I haven't put on Falcon's ecollar in quite a while when we remain on our own property - his recalls were so darn good. Until this AM. We went out the garage door and he started trotting over to his normal "gotta go" area and I did a u-turn back into the garage to grab some food for the fish. Came right back out to hear him crashing through the woods after something - I couldn't tell you if it was a deer or rabbit. Regardless, he BLEW ME OFF big time; completely ignored my "Falcon, COME!" Normally I am so proud of him stopping mid stride when called off a critter, this AM, notta chance.
He came back in about three - four minutes, winded with a big grin on his face. I picked up a section of 2 x 4 and smacked myself across the head... stupid owner, stupid owner, stupid owner.
You get too comfortable and complacent, you take things for granted, this is what happens.
Back to treat bag on my hips every time we go outside and ecollar for backup just in case.

Yay, he came back! He wanted to be with you, even though his brain was temporarily swamped by the excitement of the chase.
It happens in a blink of an eye, doesn't it? And just when we were starting to have some confidence in our hard work. I am no where near a mid-stride recall. I am just happy to get Jethro to look at me when there is fresh raccoon scent on the ground.
I sure know the feeling of disappointment, though, when my dog goes off and our connection is broken.

I don't know what it is but there must have been a full moon out this week. Our Bailey was a real knucklehead this past weekend also. Right when we were thinking she has finally settled down and become more gentle and restrained around all people, she ends up challenging a neighbor from coming into our yard and it took me a couple of repeated commands to get her called off. Scared the heck out of all of us and was completely unexpected since she and the neighbor were well acquainted.
Like you both said, right when you drop your guard just a little, they surprise you. Everyone here constantly talks about having to be always vigilant or something can get out of control in a heartbeat. That is so very true.
Glad to hear I'm not the only one. Thanks for the reminder to stay on top of things with our dogs.

Jenny, in rethinking this AM I realize Falcon is great about being called off a critter if I catch him when the ears first go up or if he is just "trotting over" to see what that sound is... I learned today that I have not trained enough/correctly to get that same response once he is in full drive, which of course is where it really counts.
I was not worried that he wouldn't come back, and he ran into the woods not down toward the road (still a long, long distance from our home) however, it is still not acceptable and I have to get my mind back into the game. I've been lazy in the heat and haven't trained/retrained. MY bad.
Greg, yep... just when you think it is safe to go back in the water.
I'm thankful for the wakeup call and glad it happened on a beastly hot AM when the big lug didn't have a full head of steam built up.

Barbara, you are a great role model for us in things like this! A lot of people would get mad at the dog and not even consider that we have some responsibility in it! I hope your head is ok after the 2 x 4!!
Ok, how come my quote thing didn't work right!?

They always seem to find a way to show us the 'holes' in our training & humble us. Mine have always managed to do it when there is an audience.
Thank goodness he came back in a short period of time & non the worse for ware.

He certainly managed to show me a thing or two this AM... And you are right Anne; I'm very thankful he didn't come home limping or with a severe cut, or worse.
Honestly, once it was obvious he was perfectly fine, I almost cracked up as he came running back to me - so proud of himself. Even though it can't be tolerated, he did make me chuckle on the inside... I do love just seeing dogs being dogs.

Koenig had me running for the e-collar a few weeks ago. Was out at the place we herd at. Had him in the 'dog park' area. (relax... it's just a huge pasture, with NO dogs, and a few empty pens to move sheep in and out of!) Apparently barn swallows are TOO MUCH FUN, and he can't be bothered with a recall.
Oh man, was I mad. I totally feel you Barbara. At least you were at home, with no one watching. I had like 5 super cool, super experienced people out giggling at my 'Schutzhund' dog, chasing birds. I'm also a newbie out there. They don't know me well, or my dog. Super embarrassing. Of course, I wanted to beat him silly, but had to settle for beating myself silly. Didn't have a 2x4, so I used a chuck-it. Once he did decide to come in, he was very proud- just like Falcon. He sure showed those birds who was boss....lol. I didn't have the e-collar with me, so couldn't set-up the situation again that night, but boy, have we been proofing our recall since then!!

They always seem to find a way to show us the 'holes' in our training & humble us. Mine have always managed to do it when there is an audience. One of my friends, Turbo, and I were standing out in the yard the other day when a stupid little squirrel caught Turbo's attention.
He quietly stood and started stalking the squirrel like a lion sneaking up on a gazelle. I coolly told my buddy, "Check this out....."
As Turbo closed the distance with his stalk, he finally made it close enough to bolt and hit full stride. I very confidently called Turbo's name KNOWING good and damn well he would immediately break chase and head back to me.
Not this time.
With a red face, I sat there and let my buddy laugh at me. "Maaaan.....He listens goooood."

BWAHAHAHAHAH!!! I've done that too.
"Hey, watch this." (Throw ball for Koenig, and recall him while he's in the middle of running to get it) Not even an ear twitch my direction.
They sure do know when someone is watching, and they have a good opportunity to teach us silly humans a lesson in showing off. Least my dog has that particular knack.
