The Justice department recently nade some major revisions to the service animal law. Had I not discovered this by accident I would have wound up in jail. You can read it here: 15 March 2011 Service Animal law changes
At least with the "out of control" clause a business owner can boot the majority of the abusers out and leave those that actually trained their dog as a service dog to go about their lives in peace.
I'm realy glad that they've clarified that only dogs are service animals and that they exclude dogs that are solely emotional support animals. Emotional support is a huge gray area that enables abusers of the law.
Weird but true - dogs sense the chemical imbalance or if the owner goes into a daze with an anxiety attack the dog can nudge/pester them and get them back on track with taking their meds. It's kinda along the same lines of seizure alert dogs.
Local business' & the VA have been having problems with pets and emotional support dogs. I recommend to business' someone check for a rabies/license tag. They can legally refuse the dog for lack of vaccination and if fluffy growls, barks, or snaps while being checked and can't easily be brought under control they can eject the dog.
My dog isn't officially a service dog but does the same for me...he can sense a chemical imbalance...I didn't train him, I don't know how he knows but he does. Depending on what is wrong he acts accordingly...he saved my life when nobody else knew anything was wrong. (I'm real good at acting like I am ok when I'm not) He's also helped me chill out when I was out of control. He is very good at it and was never traumatized with it...its like a game to him.
As far as emotional support animals, they aren't supposed to have any special privileges...the only thing is any housing has to allow the animal because it is needed. I was wondering how service animal would work with anything but a dog...ok maybe a highly trained Oriental cat (very dog-like breed).
A tired dog is a good dog, a trained dog is a better dog.
"The service dogs are placed with veterans who are suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic Brain Injury. This night is to raise money for a non-profit company called Stiggy's Dogs. They rescue shelter dogs and train them individually to meet the needs of their veteran. These dogs go to thier Veteran's free of charge thanks to Stiggy's Dogs who also pays for all the training for the dog and their veteran, as well as many other service needs. This is why they rely on donations to keep their service going."
A friend is running the fund raiser night but wanted to pass along the info on who the group is and maybe it will help others..
