I am looking for a new muzzle for Ted for the vet. His current one is not a nylon one but in order for it to be tight enough, it restricts airflow. I am looking at both the wire basket and the jafco from leerburg. Any suggestions as to what might be better for vet and occasional training sessions he may need a muzzle for (not muzzle fighting)? I have two concerns. First, with the wire does it get hot and or rust? If he needs it on in the summer, metal gets hot here, would this get too hot? Also, it says it is good for drinking, but do they rust?
As for the jafco, I know it says good ventilation, but due to the heat I like the more ventilation of the wire basket, but again worried about how hot it may get.
I doubt the wire will get too hot. You could carry your wire whisk around outside in the sun with it up against your face to see if it burns you. Don't let the neighbors see you.
I prefer the softer muzzles over the wire, it hurts less when the dog bumps me.
So I got the Jafco clear, and I am wondering about sizing. I got the size 4, but am wondering if it is too big. When it is on and tight, it hits him right below the eye. I can loosen it one or two holes on the strap and he can't pull it off and it seems to sit a little lower down, but it is loose. Check out the photos and let me know if you think it is too big. His measurements are 4.25 inches long and circumference of 11.5 inches with the mouth closed. I am worried if I go smaller it will be too small and he could pull out of it easier. This is mostly for the vet and in case of emergencies.
Yes, thank you Connie. I am worried about it being too close to the eyes. If you look at the video on leerburg on desensitizing dogs to muzzles and the measuring directions, it shows the top of the muzzle resting 1 inch below the eyes. However, if you look at the pics of the jafco muzzles on the description of the jafco muzzles on lb, it has the muzzle placed where it is on Ted. The circumference is right on and I worry if I go to the three that will be too small as the siZing info says add 1-3 inches, but he is at the circumference of the size 3.
I guess I can't get it perfect with both circumference and length. since it doesn't seem to be blocking vision, although as you can see from the pics he keeps his face down with it on, maybe this will have to do. Any other opinions are appreciated. And thanks Connie for the response! I always regard your advice as good advice.

Keith, to me it looks good. I even PMed a retired vet on our board who wasn't familiar with the model but (with limited knowledge of it) thought it looked fine. But I am emailing Ed too because I just don't have enough experience with it.
I have seen this muzzle in use, and it looked the way it looks on your dog. But I would much rather ask Ed.
