I got hurt, broken arm and need surgery.
Dexter is fine but Harley was very depress for the 36 hr I was a way now he is full of beans.
My boyfriend and mom are taking the dogs for walk and bathroom break. My big problem is that Harley will not really play with anyone but me.
At the moment I feel like a Mac truck run me over. I am on full rest for 2 weeks but recovery will be long 6months or so.
Boyfriend will try to rollerbald him but I don't want to loose our bond but don't want the dog to go crazy.
We are going to work on tricks and heeling on the right but need an outlet for the extra energy.
All strategy are welcome. We are used to 2hr plus of hard fast fun per day.

A stupid horse? Are you ok?
If you live far enough out in the country I would teach him to jog beside the car(on a leash obviously)
Do you have a Gator or 4-wheeler? Take him 2-5 miles. He could work up to 5-8. Have the boyfriend teach him.
Something different, it will tire him out.
Or get a treadmill, but it will be warm for at least another month.

When I broke my leg I used to stand on my crutches and use a ball launcher for about 30 mins, practice stays, leave it etc for 10 mins. And repeat. And repeat. And repeat.
In the house practice 'find it' with food or toys and get him to search - that's all mental.
If you google search Nina Ottoson toys - they're expensive but designed for you to interact with your dogs when one of you is injured. Most of them have varied levels of difficulty to stop it being boring.
Make a home agility course. Two chairs and a broom make a perfect jump. Teach him to crawl under a series of chairs instead of a tunnel.
When I've been out of action I got the dog to help me. Carrying stuff, fetching things when I drop them. Helping me stand.

Betty mentioned a treadmill and I'll second that. On the days around here where it's too ugly to go out or I'm laid up with soem ache or pain, I'll run our dog on our treadmill. Otherwise, we'll do lots of fetch games indoors or work on finding hidden toys. She uses as much energy searching the house for toys I hide as she would on a 45 minute fast walk.

I twisted my ankle pretty good a while back (loose board on some stairs) and I think it was worse for me than it was for the dogs. I really enjoy getting out in woods with them.
Thank God for hubby, a real angel. He’d take me out ahead and get me settled in a nice area (a good book and some wine – providing I hadn’t taken pain medication that day) and drive back to a spot he’d walk the dogs from. And not like it was a hidden search (the boys saw him drop me off and knew where I was) but the two young ones would get to me well before he would.
We have little cobra walkie talkies that come in handy for communication too.
It was my ankle so problem tossing balls (we have a ball launcher too – works great when you don’t have a lot of strength or aren’t feeling the best).
And it’s pretty hard to lose a solid bond with a dog. They really do seem to know when we’re ill or injured. I would just be focused on your progressive recovery and incorporate yourself into activities with the dogs as soon as you’re feeling a little better.
And remember to really thank your boyfriend for his efforts. He may do things a little different and may even set their training back a bit but be careful about any criticisms. Thank your lucky stars you have him and know things will get back to normal once you’re back in action.
Sorry to hear about your injury. Get well soon!!!

Anytime I've been physically down or busy, I look my dog sincerely in the eyes and apologize for any inconvenience, but he is going to have to chill the **** out for a little while. We'll get back to our fun loving antics at a later date.
The biggest thing I would watch for is his weight. The decrease in activity could show up on his ass.

It sounds like between you, your mom and boyfriend, you will come up with creative ways to keep the dogs exercised adequately. Any chance a used golfcart would be within your budget?
Over the years, I have been laid up with a badly broken leg (courtesy of a horse), a serious illness, and a number of surgeries. The dogs have always gotten through it. They've been pretty adaptive and intuitive about the fact that I wasn't my normal self.
I'm really sorry to hear about your injury and I wish you a full and speedy recovery. Please let us know how you're doing when you're able.

thank for the input.
For the next 3 days I am not permited to do anything. I have a total nerve block to my arm. After that I will have very limited mobility for one more week.
With the follow up next friday I will know more.
Boyfriend is wounderfull and get up 30 min earlier to let the dog run in the back field.

How did you break your arm? Sounds like a kick or a bad fall. Sounds like it hurts like hell!
