Help! I went and found the GSD of my dreams. She has such a wonderful temperament even my vet wants her, not to mention that she's beautiful. She's 9 months old and I have crate trained her. I would now like to eliminate the crate, but every time she's left out alone, she chews everything. I have put things up and she finds them. She recently pawed open the linen closet door and demolished 24 rolls of toilet paper. (No, I didn't correct her-the damage was done.) She has a thing for wood, too, like the legs of my coffee table. I have left her with chew bones, a kong filled with peanut butter, everything appropriate I can think of. I'm a stay at home mom, so I'm not usually gone long. This is the only problem I have with her. I don't how to correct it because I'm not there when it happens to do it immediately. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

What's wrong with the crate? Your puppy is still a puppy. My almost 4 year old female is still crated when we leave. She was crated at night until 14 months of age. She's gluten intolerant, so stealing a loaf of bread would be a very bad thing.
If you continue to leave her out chewing stuff will be a habit that you will not be able to break. If you continue to crate her until she's older it shouldn't start to begin with. It might already be a habit, in which case you will have to crate her indefinitely when you are gone. Remember, the whole purpose of the crate is to prevent situations like this.

Jacklyn, This pup is to young to be left alone in the house. You have to either crate or kennel this pup when your not home or he's gonna eat the entire house and your going to wind up hating the dog.
Give the pup a Kong to keep him occupied and keep him contained. He could also swallow something serious that could kill him or electricution.

I agree. The best way to correct the chewing is by not allowing it to happen. I have seen dogs eat sheet rock off the walls, wood, glass. Could cost you in repairs and vet bills. The crate will prevent alot of problems. I have a 9 month old male. I dont trust him in a room alone much less the house when unattended.
What is the motivation to leave the dog outside the crate when alone?

I guess I was just rushing things. I have a home based business and a client came by the other night and all but accused me of cruelty. The crate is big enough for her to get into, turn around and lay down. This woman made a few comments about if the animal police (humane society around here) knew what I was doing to my dog.... Any way, I wouldn't be a bit surprised to hear them knocking on my door. I know I'm doing right by my puppy because she's happy and healthy and I can take her just about anywhere and she remains relatively well behaved. This is the first dog I've owned as an adult (family had GSD's) and I guess I just got scared that I could get in trouble for crating her. Good thing this lady didn't know I had a prong collar, eh? Thanks.

No, she is no longer a client. I don't need business that bad.

Animal control can't give you trouble for a crate. Don't listen to people like that. Animal control will probably laugh at her when she calls unless she exaggerates. Letting a dog stay out and cause an intestinal blockage because they ate a rug is cruel.

Put the crate in the bedroom or someplace where clients won't see it. You've got a no win situation there. If the dog is loose and jumps on clients, they will be scared and/or pissed off. If the dog is crated in their presence it will detract from business at hand. Since you work from home, you've got plenty of time for short dog walks, etc..

The Humane Society in my area promotes crate training. My dogs are 11, 9, and 6, and I still crate them at night and when we are out. My dogs are very trustworthy, but why set them up for failure? If the lady or anyone else threatens to call the HS, offer to dial the phone for them.

Jacklyn,
Hey you are doing the right thing! Everyone hit the nail on the head. I crate both of my GSD's 20 months and 3 years or put them in their runs hell my 20 month old had a 4 panty a day habit when he was a wee pup, I thought my daughter was going to kill us both LOL
Crating is safe for your pup and for you and your clients, that dumb ass who said you where cruel probably has a goldfish for a pet! Pay no attention, animal control here really supports crate training and a well socialized dog, they are big into safe pets not dumb ass people!
You do the right thing and continue with your training, and keep your house in one piece!
Great advise guys!
Be Safe and Enjoy your pup their a joy!

Is there anything on this site that will tell you how to prepare a dog to have run of the house at night and when you are not home? My dog is now 13 months and I am ready to stop paying ADT.
