My gsd chews on himself. I'm tired of it. We gave him corterzoin shots, and medicines, but they don't work. My mom and I are thinking about getting a test done on him to see what he's alergic to. We have changed his food so much. He's eating California Natural right now. I'm thinking of switching to Solid Gold. Can anyone help me on this problem? I've been on the
germanshepherds.com web board and all I found out they say is that some of their dogs do it to. Well, how is that going to help me? Please help.

Chewing himself isn`t always allergies. What part does he chew? If it is a joint it could be pain in that joint, it could be boredom or nerves. Be more specific as to when he chews (time of day or even seasonal) and what part of his body.
The only thing needed for evil to exist is for good men to stand by and do nothing!!!
He chews near his hipbone sometimes. He doesn't do it constantly, but I'm tired of seeing hair missing. He gets walked in the morning sometimes and we go on bike rides after school.
(I am in High School) My school doesn't start till 9:35am. I don't know if he's bored, but we do put a bone in his crate, and my mom stays at home and lets him out a lot.
Missy,
As Roger said, it could be pain in that hip. If you haven't already, get this hip(s)checked by a Vet. If it's a skin problem...what has always worked for my dog and his severe carpet allergy is Gold Bond Extra Strength Powder. Before I apply it, I wipe the area with the human brand Anti-Bacteria wipe (can even be the generic kind), let it dry, then apply a fair amount of the powder. My dog really doesn't like the taste, so he doesn't lick it. If your dog has no skin redness or irritation, it may not be his skin, and possibly the hip. It most likely is not a skin mite, because you say he only chews that one area. So, I wouldn't go all out and have skin tests done just yet.
Let us know what comes of this. Hopefully this has helped. Brandi
