It is really hard to get the Advantage onto Jethro. First, he is super squirmy and hates having it applied, so we have to be quick about it. Second, his coat has two layers, first his long thick "mane" hair, and second the thicker, woolier undercoat. It is super hard to separate all the stems to get down to skin.
This morning we tried to make an application, and it looked like most of it was in the hair, very little on the skin. Should I try for a second application? Or will the material work its way down to his skin? I don't want to OD him on the stuff, I just want to make sure he is protected.
Any opinions?
Thanks.

I love Program... since it's a pill, there is no guess work.
The key to Advantage, and other topical's like it, are to get it on the skin, so it can be absorbed through the skin.
Personally I wouldn't reapply, since it's a pesticide. Powerful stuff. I'd leave the greasy hair for 3 days (if you can stand it, I know I can't!) and then wipe it off with baby wipes, assuming that whatever is going to be absorbed has been by that point, and it's only residue thats left.
Then again, he's a big boy. In reality, I don't think a second 1/2 dose of flea meds would kill him. *shrug*
I dunno. I hate fleas!! Period, end of story!!!

Yes, and we are having a big outbreak here. My dogs don't socialize much but they are walking where other dogs have been. I'm ready to shave a little square behind his ears... but that would look awful!

I would brush it thru the coat. Perhaps re-apply in 2 weeks as opposed to a month.
I think that would be safe.

I recently switched to the Comfortis pill. Our vet says most of the topicals aren't reliably effective for a month anymore--flea populations have developed immunity to the insecticide used in them. She (vet) said they have to be applied every 2 weeks now to remain effective.

You can always wash the dog, wait a day or two for the natural oils to come back out if you don't use soap free shampoo, and the reapply a full dose. A waste of money, but if you're really worried about it, I think that'd be most effective at preventing an overdose.

I would just use a fine toothed comb and comb it through the area. It should work it's way down OK.
When I apply the topical I start somewhere in the middle of the dogs back, put the nozzle down in the hair, then move it up towards the shoulders a few inches against then grain before I start squeezing it out, still moving up towards the shoulders. This parts the hair and gets it down to the skin without me having to actually try to part the hair with my hands, and actually leaves my left hand free to hold the dogs collar if need, while I apply with my right.

I use the topical and I've found a pretty effective way to get him to keep still for a few seconds, and get down to the skin. I do it in two halves. First I stand with him between my legs facing forward, so that I can keep him from squirming too much, and I pull a little bit of fur backward toward his head (rather than trying to split one side from the other). Usually that exposes at least a little bit of skin-- enough that I can get a pretty big drop of the stuff on there. I repeat 2-3 places between shoulder blades and mid-back, using about 1/2 the stuff.
Then I simply turn around so that he's still between my legs but facing backward, and I get the rest of his back down to where the tail starts. Good, thorough coverage and skin contact with minimal extra bleeding out into the fur.
The key is pushing the hair backward (gently), opposite the grain, to expose the skin near where you've parted the hair.

Read the instruction to be sure, but I think Advantage can be reapplied after only a week. So if you notice fleas, you could always dose him up again...would hate to do that personally, but I hate fleas more!
