"She said she almost instinctively went up and did the first thing she thought of. She punched the bear's face and scooped away her dog when it let go."
This isn't the first I've heard of a black bear backing down from a punch to the nose. A co-worker once bonked an aggressive black bear with her nalgene bottle- which worked to shoo the bear away- to her great relief.
This is why I prefer a large dog. I can train my dogs to not chase bears. I can NOT train a bear to not chase my dogs. Bears are everywhere we go out on the trails, especially this time of year when they are desperate to pack on the calories before winter.
Walk softly and carry a big stick...(or more accurately walk as loudly as possible and carry bear spray).

ROFL.... When i started reading that sentence my brain got ahead of my eyes. I was thinking WAIT.... Kiersten.... you're way smarter then that, you know better then to walk softly when you're concerned about bears.... oh right, she was getting to that. I think I need more sleep. Either that, or less caffeine.
Hmm. That was some latin phrase that I learned in 7th grade and promptly forgot...at least forgot the latin part of it. "With a sword I seek peace" is another one... can't remember where that came from either.
Anyway, no, the point is to make as much noise as possible when running in bear country. Bears hate suprises.
